A Good Soldier of Jesus Christ 2 Timothy 2:1-15 Rev. Charlie Wilfong Aren’t there times when everything you try to do is a struggle? I try to resist thinking of life that way. But we each certainly face difficulties. If you want to follow Jesus, it’s not always easy. Jesus himself said we would have trouble in this world. The Bible uses the images of combat and armor to teach about living a godly life. PUMC hosted a great Vacation Bible School experience for kids last week about the Armor of God. They learned how to claim territory for Jesus as part of the Lord’s Army. What does it mean to you to be a good soldier of Jesus Christ?

The Church’s One Foundation Toccata on ‘St. Gertrude’

Today’s Bible Verse You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well. Share in suffering like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving in the army gets entangled in everyday affairs; the soldier’s aim is to please the enlisting officer. And in the case of an athlete, no one is crowned without competing according to the rules. It is the farmer who does the work who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in all things. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself. We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

One Whale of a Tale “Gone fishing” is the sign on the door of many an angler this time of year. The long days, the warm breezes, and the hope of a good catch lure expert fishers and weekend casters alike. And the stories that come home can be real whoppers! The high adventure intensifies with every telling and the fish get longer with every measure of outstretched arms. The fishing is fun, the stories are engaging, and the remembering is almost as good as the doing. The Bible gives us a whopper of a fish story, too. Only in this tale, the fish does the catching. God gives Jonah a specific assignment. But not wanting to obey God’s instruction, Jonah heads the opposite direction... on a boat... and out to sea. Jonah ends up overboard and is caught up in the belly of a whale. The adventure, the stories, and the lessons that ensue make for one whale of a tale! Join us in NewDay Praise Worship starting Sunday, June 25, for “One Whale of a Tale!” Featuring Jonah’s fishing story and God’s work for good through Jonah’s adventures.

Classic Worship Schedule Change On Sunday, July 2, you can expect to find one small change in the Sunday morning Classic Worship schedule. Starting on the first Sunday of July, 11:10 Classic Worship will begin at 11:00 a.m. This will mean a shorter wait time for 9:45 Sunday School participants who want to attend the third hour of Classic Worship, and since worship will now conclude prior to 12-noon, it may be a more attractive option for worshipers who have lunch or afternoon plans. Please share this news with friends and family and invite them to join you for worship!
