IN THE EYE OF THE STORM JONAH 1:1-17

June 25, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.

When Storms Come Jonah 1:1-17

“Gone fishing” is the sign on the door of many an angler this time of year. The long days, the warm breezes, and the hope of a good catch lure expert fishers and weekend casters, alike. And the stories that come home can be real whoppers! The high adventure intensifies with every telling and the fish get longer with every measure of outstretched arms. The fishing is fun, the stories are engaging, and the remembering is almost as good as the doing. The Bible gives us a whopper of a fish story, too. Only in this tale, the fish does the catching. God gives Jonah a specific assignment. But not wanting to obey God’s instruction, Jonah heads the opposite direction... on a boat... and out to sea. A violent storm comes up, and Jonah is blamed. The sailors fear for their lives and throw Jonah overboard. Surely going down to his death, Jonah finds himself in the belly of a whale. Thinking he was walking away from a difficult task to live on easy street, Jonah finds himself in deep water. Thinking he could flee from God, Jonah finds that God is with him even in the belly of the whale. There’s no place we can go where God’s mercy can’t reach us, even in the middle of the storm

Jonah Tries to Run Away from God Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, “Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.” But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain down, and was fast asleep. The captain came and said to him, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish.” The sailors said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, so that we may know on whose account this calamity has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him, “Tell us why this calamity has come upon us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” “I am a Hebrew,” he replied. “I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Then the men were even more afraid, and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them so. Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous. He said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great storm has come upon you.” Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them. Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, O Lord, we pray, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life. Do not make us guilty of innocent blood; for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.” So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging. Then the men feared the Lord even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. But the Lord provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Jonah 1:1-17 (NRSV)

One Whale of a Tale “Gone fishing” is the sign on the door of many an angler this time of year. The high adventure intensifies with every telling and the fish get longer with every measure of outstretched arms. God gives Jonah a specific assignment. But not wanting to obey God’s instruction, Jonah heads the opposite direction... on a boat... and out to sea. Jonah ends up overboard and is caught up in the belly of a whale. The adventure, the stories, and the lessons that ensue make for one whale of a tale! You are invited to NewDay Praise Worship starting Sunday, June 25, 9:50 a.m. for “One Whale of a Tale!” Featuring Jonah’s fishing story and God’s work for good through Jonah’s adventures.

Got Questions? So did Jesus. Discover the questions Jesus asked. In the last four Sundays of July, Pastor Charlie will be exploring some of Jesus’ questions in a Classic Worship series entitled, “Got Questions? So did Jesus. Discover the questions Jesus asked.” The questions Jesus poses to us will stretch our minds and our hearts. Struggling to discover the answers will grow us in many ways and yield rich lessons. That seems to be the way good questions work. Classic Worship at 8:30, 9:50, and 11:00 a.m.

• July 9: “Can you see anything?” from Mark 8. • July 16: “What do you want me to do for you?” from Matthew 20. • July 23: “Why are you afraid?” from Matthew 8. • July 30: “Do you want to be made well?” from John 5. Take your questions to trustworthy friends and to Jesus. It’s safe to wonder and ask. As you ponder and wrestle with the questions Jesus asks of you, you may discover some of the best lessons of all.

Classic Worship Schedule Change On Sunday, July 2, you can expect to find one small change in the Sunday morning Classic Worship schedule. Starting on the first Sunday of July, 11:10 Classic Worship will begin at 11:00 a.m. This will mean a shorter wait time for 9:45 Sunday School participants who want to attend the third hour of Classic Worship, and since worship will now conclude prior to 12-noon, it may be a more attractive option for worshipers who have lunch or afternoon plans. Please share this news with friends and family and invite them to join you for worship!
