SECOND CHANCES JONAH 2:1-3:3A

July 2, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.

Second Chances Jonah 2:1-3:3a

When one fisher came home without any fish, he was asked, “I thought you were going fishing? Why don’t you have any fish?” To which the fisher responded, “I said I was going fishing, not catching.” A. K. Best said, “The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.” A large part of fishing is casting the line and waiting, casting the line and waiting, and casting it yet again. You get as many chances as you have time for. And if you are good - or lucky - you might even catch a fish. Not everything in life offers so many chances at success. Final exams, the “court of last resort,” and the third strike are all definitive. Once you’ve reached these, you’ve had all the chances you are going to get. Jonah may have thought he was out of chances when he found himself in the belly of a great fish. But even though he had disobeyed and run from God, God did not give up on him. God gave him a second chance. Our God is a God of second, third, fourth, fifth and even sixth chances. In fact, God is a God of unlimited chances. Think you’ve tested and tried God to his limits? Think again. God is just waiting to give you another chance.

Jonah Tries to Run Away from God Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, “I called to the Lord out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; how shall I look again upon your holy temple?’ The waters closed in over me; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped around my head at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the Pit, O Lord my God. As my life was ebbing away, I remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. Those who worship vain idols forsake their true loyalty. But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the Lord!” Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it spewed Jonah out upon the dry land. The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah 2:1-3:3a (NRSV)

2017 PUMC Annual Fish Fry The 2017 PUMC Annual Fish Fry is July 28 and 29! There will be sign-ups for fish fry volunteers in the main lobby at PUMC on Sunday mornings July 2, 9, 16, and 23. Please stop at the tables to learn more and find a place to serve! PUMC’s annual fish fry is one of the biggest outreach events of PUMC each year. We welcome thousands of neighbors and friends, serve tons of food, and the profits all support missions both near and far. Sunday School classes, youth groups, the Missions Committee, and other groups directly benefit from volunteering for this event. We are proud of the nearly 200 volunteers each year who participate by baking desserts, frying fish, serving the main line, and so much more. From humble beginnings of welcoming home troops from WWII, this annual event has been embraced by the entire Plainfield area community. Please plan on enjoying the good food and hospitality with us at this year’s fish fry. Todd Sprinkle, First Chair Jane Iles, Second Chair Rich Philip, Third Chair

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

Got Questions? So did Jesus. Discover the questions Jesus asked. In the last four Sundays of July, Pastor Charlie will be exploring some of Jesus’ questions in a Classic Worship series entitled, “Got Questions? So did Jesus. Discover the questions Jesus asked.” The questions Jesus poses to us will stretch our minds and our hearts. Struggling to discover the answers will grow us in many ways and yield rich lessons. That seems to be the way good questions work. Classic Worship at 8:30, 9:50, and 11:00 a.m.

• July 9: “Can you see anything?” from Mark 8. • July 16: “What do you want me to do for you?” from Matthew 20. • July 23: “Why are you afraid?” from Matthew 8. • July 30: “Do you want to be made well?” from John 5. Take your questions to trustworthy friends and to Jesus. It’s safe to wonder and ask. As you ponder and wrestle with the questions Jesus asks of you, you may discover some of the best lessons of all.
