The Hacked Life

Follow (Live by Faith) Matthew 9:9-13

July 16, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.

Follow (Live by Faith) Matthew 9:9-13

Religion has become a dirty word to some. It reeks of judgment, rules, restrictions, and exclusivity. Christians, the culture, and commentators alike have piled on complications and confusion like coral and crustaceans that cling to a sunken ship. Many have turned away from the Christian religion, not sure they want to be a part of what they see. Those that remain find it confusing. What if it really wasn’t so complicated? What would we find it we decluttered and demystified it; stripped it down to its core? At its center, the Christian faith is about Jesus. And Jesus didn’t give us rules, restrictions or regulations. Jesus extended an invitation. To all kinds of people he met in all kinds of circumstances, he simply said, “Follow me.” He didn’t place conditions on his invitation; he didn’t require that people believe certain things; nor did he distribute rule books that people had to comply with before taking up with him. His invitation was to come as you are, right now, today, and follow him. In NewDay Praise Worship this month we are having a little fun with “life hacks” - those tips, techniques, secrets and shortcuts that make life easier. And we ask, “Are there spiritual life hacks? Are there tips and shortcuts to make the spiritual life easier, more meaningful, more vital and impactful?” Life with Jesus does not have to be complicated nor burdensome. The Bible gives us some clear, concise words to guide and grow our spiritual lives. And there are tools and techniques for incorporating more of Jesus into our everyday lives. Sunday, July 16, (9:50 a.m.) we consider the life of faith and what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.” Matthew 9:9-13 (NRSV)

2017 PUMC Annual Fish Fry The 2017 PUMC Annual Fish Fry is July 28 and 29! There will be sign-ups for fish fry volunteers in the main lobby at PUMC on Sunday mornings July 2, 9, 16, and 23. Please stop at the tables to learn more and find a place to serve!

You Are Invited The flowers on the platform in the sanctuary this morning are given in celebration of Marjorie Edmondson Welker’s 100th birthday, which is Monday, July 17, 2017. You are invited to a reception in her honor today, July 16, 2-4 p.m. in Clayton Hall at PUMC (enter door #14). All are welcome!

PUMC’s annual fish fry is one of the biggest outreach events of PUMC each year. We welcome thousands of neighbors and friends, serve tons of food, and the profits all support missions both near and far. Sunday School classes, youth groups, the Missions Committee, and other groups directly benefit from volunteering for this event. We are proud of the nearly 200 volunteers each year who participate by baking desserts, frying fish, serving the main line, and so much more. From humble beginnings of welcoming home troops from WWII, this annual event has been embraced by the entire Plainfield area community. Please plan on enjoying the good food and hospitality with us at this year’s fish fry. Todd Sprinkle, First Chair Jane Iles, Second Chair Rich Philip, Third Chair

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

Go Back in Time with Encore Senior Ministry Wed., August 2; Leave PUMC at 9:15 a.m. $10 for both tours; lunch at your own expense

Encore has a special day planned and you are invited! We will travel to Crawfordsville to tour the Henry S. Lane home, have lunch at Creekside Lodge, and then tour Lew Wallace’s home. Henry Lane (1811-1881) was the founder of the Republican Party, Chair of the first Republican National Convention, an Indiana governor, a congressman, a US senator and close friend of Abraham Lincoln. We will also tour the nearby home of Lane’s brotherin-law Lew Wallace. At various times in his life Wallace was a lawyer; Indiana state senator; a major general during the Civil War; vice president of the court-martial that tried the conspirators behind the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln; New Mexico Territory governor; American minister to Turkey from 1881 to 1885; and, the role for which he is best remembered today, author of the classic historical novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880).

Both restored homes will certainly take us back in time! So sorry that neither home is handicap accessible. You may need to be aware that there are 2-4 steps to enter the buildings. The Lane Home also has an upstairs and you may choose whether or not to tour that area. Lunch will be at Creekside Lodge. Stop by the Encore Desk (located in the Main Lobby) today, July 23 or July 30 to learn more and sign up to attend this very special event. This is a great opportunity for fellowship, fun and education! Questions? Call Sue Hylton 317.839.2946.
