The Hacked Life

Connect (Grow in Grace) John 15:1-5

July 23, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.

Connect (Grow in Grace) John 15:1-5

We begin every day with the best of intentions. “Today I will.... get out of bed on my first alarm... stick to my diet... be kinder to my spouse... spend more time with my kids... be to work on time... go to bed early...” But as one wise person noted, “Life has a way of disregarding even our best intentions.” But if we’re intentional and diligent, we will apply strategies and techniques that help us succeed. If we put our alarm clock across the room we have to get out of bed to turn it off. Success! If we lay out clothes and pack lunches the night before, we can get out the door early and be to work on time. Success! Followers of Jesus know that to grow a vibrant and meaningful spiritual life, we have to be intentional and diligent about doing some things on a regular basis that keep us connected to Jesus. Things like: pray, read and study the Bible, worship and spend time with other followers. But even in our high hopes for our relationship with Jesus... life has a way of disregarding even our best intentions. In NewDay Praise Worship this month we are having a little fun with “life hacks” - those tips, techniques, secrets and shortcuts that make life easier. And we ask, “Are there spiritual life hacks? Are there tips and shortcuts to make the spiritual life easier, more meaningful, more vital and impactful?” Life with Jesus does not have to be complicated nor burdensome. The Bible gives us some clear, concise words to guide and grow our spiritual lives. And there are tools and techniques for incorporating more of Jesus into our everyday lives. Sunday, July 23, (9:50 a.m.) we consider practices, habits, and strategies for living a life connected to Jesus that grows us spiritually and bears good fruit for him.

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:1-5 (NRSV)

PUMC Collecting School Supplies PUMC is showing God’s BIG Love to area students with school supplies needed for classes this fall. Donations of pencils, crayons, wide-ruled spiral notebooks, loose leaf notebook paper, solar calculators, glue sticks and backpacks may be left in the Donation Depot across from the church office (near door #2) or at any donation center near entrances at PUMC through the month of July. Thank you for serving the children of Plainfield with your generous donations.

We will travel to Crawfordsville to tour the Henry S. Lane home, have lunch at Creekside Lodge, and then tour Lew Wallace’s home. Henry Lane (1811-1881) was the founder of the Republican Party, Chair of the first Republican National Convention, an Indiana governor, a congressman, a US senator and close friend of Abraham Lincoln. We will also tour the nearby home of Lane’s brother-in-law Lew Wallace. At various times in his life Wallace was a lawyer; Indiana state senator; a major general during the Civil War; vice president of the court-martial that tried the conspirators behind the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln; New Mexico Territory governor;

LAST SATURDAY LUNCH Due to the fish fry being on the weekend of the Last Saturday Lunch, there will not be a lunch this month. We look forward to serving you next on August 26, 2017.

American minister to Turkey from 1881 to 1885; and, the role for which he is best remembered today, author of the classic historical novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880). Both restored homes will certainly take us back in time! So sorry that neither home is handicap accessible. You may need to be aware that there are 2-4 steps to enter the buildings. The Lane Home also has an upstairs and you may choose whether or not to tour that area. Lunch will be at Creekside Lodge. Stop by the Encore Desk (located in the Main Lobby) today or next Sunday to learn more and sign up to attend this very special event. Space is limited. This is a great opportunity for fellowship, fun and education! Questions? Call Sue Hylton 317.839.2946.

PUMC’s annual fish fry is one of the biggest outreach events of PUMC each year. We welcome thousands of neighbors and friends, serve tons of food, and the profits all support missions both near and far. Sunday School classes, youth groups, the Missions Committee, and other groups directly benefit from volunteering for this event. We are proud of the nearly 200 volunteers each year who participate by baking desserts, frying fish, serving the main line, and so much more.

2017 PUMC Annual Fish Fry The 2017 PUMC Annual Fish Fry is July 28 and 29! There will be sign-ups for fish fry volunteers in the main lobby at PUMC on Sunday mornings July 2, 9, 16, and 23. Please stop at the tables to learn more and find a place to serve!

From humble beginnings of welcoming home troops from WWII, this annual event has been embraced by the entire Plainfield area community. Please plan on enjoying the good food and hospitality with us at this year’s fish fry. Todd Sprinkle, First Chair Jane Iles, Second Chair Rich Philip, Third Chair
