Why Are You Afraid? Matthew 8:23-27 Rev. Charlie Wilfong
It’s a basic emotion. What frightens you the most-threatening weather, the economy, a vulnerable relationship? Maybe something else keeps you awake at night shivering under the covers. Maybe you’re not plagued with fear. Sometimes a sudden change in our circumstances can startle us into being afraid. Some say it’s all about abandonment. Others say it’s all about control. That may reveal more about the “expert” explaining it than the subject itself. What I’m afraid of is one thing. Why I’m afraid is another. How does Jesus figure in to fear? Does he really know anything about my tough times?

Time for Prayer Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Giving
Because God gives, we give. Thank you for your generosity.

Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen
* Hymn for Parting 591
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. A windstorm arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a dead calm. They were amazed, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”

2017 PUMC Annual Fish Fry The 2017 PUMC Annual Fish Fry is July 28 and 29!
We welcome thousands of neighbors and friends, serve tons of food, and the profits all support missions both near and far. Sunday School classes, youth groups, the Missions Committee, and other groups directly benefit from volunteering for this event. We are proud of the nearly 200 volunteers each year who participate by baking desserts, frying fish, serving the main line, and so much more.
There will be sign-ups for fish fry volunteers in the main lobby at PUMC on Sunday mornings July 2, 9, 16, and 23. Please stop at the tables to learn more and find a place to serve!
From humble beginnings of welcoming home troops from WWII, this annual event has been embraced by the entire Plainfield area community. Please plan on enjoying the good food and hospitality with us at this year’s fish fry.
PUMC’s annual fish fry is one of the biggest outreach events of PUMC each year.

FREE COMMUNITY CONCERT “FISH FRY SATURDAY”
PUMC SANCTUARY • SATURDAY • JULY 29 • 7:00 P.M. 600 SIMMONS STREET • PLAINFIELD, IN 46168 WWW.PUMC.ORG
Go Back in Time with Encore Senior Ministry Wed., August 2; Leave PUMC at 9:15 a.m. $10 for both tours; lunch at your own expense Encore has a special day planned and you are invited! We will travel to Crawfordsville to tour the Henry S. Lane home, have lunch at Creekside Lodge, and then tour Lew Wallace’s home. Henry Lane (1811-1881) was the founder of the Republican Party, Chair of the first Republican National Convention, an Indiana governor, a congressman, a US senator and close friend of Abraham Lincoln. We will also tour the nearby home of Lane’s brother-in-law Lew Wallace. At various times in his life Wallace was a lawyer; Indiana state senator; a major general during the Civil War; vice president of the court-martial that tried the conspirators behind the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln; New Mexico Territory governor; American
minister to Turkey from 1881 to 1885; and, the role for which he is best remembered today, author of the classic historical novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880). Both restored homes will certainly take us back in time! So sorry that neither home is handicap accessible. You may need to be aware that there are 2-4 steps to enter the buildings. The Lane Home also has an upstairs and you may choose whether or not to tour that area. Lunch will be at Creekside Lodge. Stop by the Encore Desk (located in the Main Lobby) today or next Sunday to learn more and sign up to attend this very special event. Space is limited. This is a great opportunity for fellowship, fun and education! Questions? Call Sue Hylton 317.839.2946.
LAST SATURDAY LUNCH PUMC Collecting School Supplies PUMC is showing God’s BIG Love to area students with school supplies needed for classes this fall. Donations of pencils, crayons, wideruled spiral notebooks, loose leaf notebook paper, solar calculators, glue sticks and backpacks may be left in the Donation Depot across from the church office (near door #2) or at any donation center near entrances at PUMC through the month of July. Thank you for serving the children of Plainfield with your generous donations.
Due to the fish fry being on the weekend of the Last Saturday Lunch, there will not be a lunch this month. We look forward to serving you next on August 26, 2017.
