The Hacked Life Live (Walk in Love) Matthew 22:34-40

July 23, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.

Live (Walk in Love) Matthew 22:34-40

Everyone lives by some purpose, goal, or standard. Maybe your primary goal is to make as much money as possible. Maybe it’s to assure your family’s safety and happiness. Maybe your goal is to get to the top of your profession. Maybe it’s your purpose in life to please others. Whatever it is for you, you put effort, resources, and intention towards it. And it creeps into all areas of your life, coloring your attitude and actions and serving as a compass for movement forward. You do your best to learn, apply and master the tips, techniques, and strategies that will move you most efficiently and effectively toward your hoped-for end. Jesus also had a very clear standard for his life. When asked what the most important commandment (directive for living) was, he said very clearly: Love God and love others. Everything else revolves around these. Followers of Jesus commit to this same goal and purpose - to love God and love others above all else. But even when the heart and mind is willing, it can be difficult to live this life of love. So many other things compete for our attention and a high place on our list of priorities. In NewDay Praise Worship this month we are having a little fun with “life hacks” - those tips, techniques, secrets and shortcuts that make life easier. And we ask, “Are there spiritual life hacks? Are there tips and shortcuts to make the spiritual life easier, more meaningful, more vital and impactful?” Life with Jesus does not have to be complicated nor burdensome. The Bible gives us some clear, concise words to guide and grow our spiritual lives. And there are tools and techniques for incorporating more of Jesus into our everyday lives. Sunday, July 30, (9:50 a.m.) we consider how to live a life of love that shows Jesus as the singular standard for our lives.

The Greatest Commandment When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Matthew 22:34-40 (NRSV)

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

Doing Life Together We modern Americans are an independent lot. We take pride in forging our own trails, building our own future, and doing things the way we want to do them. But if we spend much time at all in the Gospel accounts of the life of Jesus, we see that the life of a follower of Jesus is not an independent life, but a life lived in community. Among the first things that Jesus did in his public ministry was gather a small group of people around him with whom to do life. They traveled together, prayed and worshiped together, served together, encouraged and challenged each other, and undoubtedly, even had fun together. In NewDay Praise Worship starting August 20, we will explore life in community, seeking out biblical encouragement for our life together in community and providing some practical ways to make it happen for each of us.

Go Back in Time with Encore Senior Ministry We only have room for 5 more people unless you drive yourself! Wed., August 2; Leave PUMC at 9:15 a.m. $10 for both tours; lunch at your own expense Encore has a special day planned and you are invited! We will travel to Crawfordsville to tour the Henry S. Lane home, have lunch at Creekside Lodge, and then tour Lew Wallace’s home. Henry Lane (1811-1881) was the founder of the Republican Party, Chair of the first Republican National Convention, an Indiana governor, a congressman, a US senator and close friend of Abraham Lincoln. We will also tour the nearby home of Lane’s brother-in-law Lew Wallace. At various times in his life Wallace was a lawyer; Indiana state senator; a major general during the Civil War; vice president of the court-martial that tried the conspirators behind the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln; New

Mexico Territory governor; American minister to Turkey from 1881 to 1885; and, the role for which he is best remembered today, author of the classic historical novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880). Both restored homes will certainly take us back in time! So sorry that neither home is handicap accessible. You may need to be aware that there are 2-4 steps to enter the buildings. The Lane Home also has an upstairs and you may choose whether or not to tour that area. Lunch will be at Creekside Lodge. Stop by the Encore Desk (located in the Main Lobby) today to learn more and sign up to attend this very special event. This is the last day to register. Transportation space is limited. This is a great opportunity for fellowship, fun and education! Questions? Call Sue Hylton 317.839.2946.

It’s Back to School Time in Bible Explorers! Children through Grade 5 are invited to a fun, interactive time of learning and growing in their faith every Sunday morning in PUMC’s Bible Explorers. Through games, stories, lessons and hands-on activities and crafts, student build a solid foundation on which to build a life-long relationship with Jesus. You can help that happen for children here at PUMC! Will you commit to serve in one of the following areas to show and share the love of Jesus with our students? It only takes one hour, once a month, during the school year to make a difference in a student’s life. Please consider serving in one of the following areas:

• Infant Toddler Room: The infant toddler room needs a servant volunteers

for 8:30 and 9:50 worship hours. In this room servants strive to make sure the little ones are happy and having a good time! It’s the first step in building a relationship of love and acceptance. This may require you to get on the floor and play cars or snuggle in a rocking chair and read books. Either way, it’s a joy to be with them!

• 3’s-PreK room: Slightly more engaging. With these children we have a little breakfast, teach a simple lesson, make a craft, and play games!

• Bible Explorers – K- Grade 5: Several servant volunteer positions are still available for this school year! Students gather in a large group area for breakfast, music and prayer, before going to their classrooms for age appropriate lessons, stories, crafts, and play.

To volunteer or learn more, please contact Amanda Norton, Director of Children’s Ministry, at anorton@pumc.org.
