People engage in all kinds of self-destructive behaviors. Often, they are fully aware of the risks they are taking. Why? A popular psychologist on TV often uses the question, “How is that working for you?” The notion behind the question is also used to explain behaviors that are out of the norm, like, “That strange thing they do must be working for them”. Sometimes, the behavior that harms us also gives us some perceived benefit. It might provide comfort, control, sympathy, or something else, even if only temporarily. How do we break these cycles of behavior? Can Jesus help?

After this there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes. In these lay many invalids— blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, “It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.” But he answered them, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’ ” They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take it up and walk’?” Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared in the crowd that was there. Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well! Do not sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.” The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus, because he was doing such things on the sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, and I also am working.” For this reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the sabbath, but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God. We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

It’s Back to School Time in Bible Explorers! Children through Grade 5 are invited to a fun, interactive time of learning and growing in their faith every Sunday morning in PUMC’s Bible Explorers. Through games, stories, lessons and hands-on activities and crafts, student build a solid foundation on which to build a life-long relationship with Jesus. You can help that happen for children here at PUMC! Will you commit to serve in one of the following areas to show and share the love of Jesus with our students? It only takes one hour, once a month, during the school year to make a difference in a student’s life. Please consider serving in one of the following areas:

• Infant Toddler Room: The infant toddler room needs a

servant volunteers for 8:30 and 9:50 worship hours. In this room servants strive to make sure the little ones are happy and having a good time! It’s the first step in building a relationship of love and acceptance. This may require you to get on the floor and play cars or snuggle in a rocking chair and read books. Either way, it’s a joy to be with them!

• 3’s-PreK room: Slightly more engaging. With these

children we have a little breakfast, teach a simple lesson, make a craft, and play games!

• Bible Explorers – K- Grade 5: Several servant volunteer positions are still available for this school year! Students gather in a large group area for breakfast, music and prayer, before going to their classrooms for age appropriate lessons, stories, crafts, and play.

To volunteer or learn more, please contact Amanda Norton, Director of Children’s Ministry, at anorton@pumc.org.

Go Back in Time with Encore Senior Ministry We only have room for 5 more people unless you drive yourself! Wed., August 2; Leave PUMC at 9:15 a.m. $10 for both tours; lunch at your own expense Encore has a special day planned and you are invited! We will travel to Crawfordsville to tour the Henry S. Lane home, have lunch at Creekside Lodge, and then tour Lew Wallace’s home. Henry Lane (1811-1881) was the founder of the Republican Party, Chair of the first Republican National Convention, an Indiana governor, a congressman, a US senator and close friend of Abraham Lincoln. We will also tour the nearby home of Lane’s brother-in-law Lew Wallace. At various times in his life Wallace was a lawyer; Indiana state senator; a major general during the Civil War; vice president of the court-martial that tried the conspirators behind the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln; New Mexico Territory governor;

American minister to Turkey from 1881 to 1885; and, the role for which he is best remembered today, author of the classic historical novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880). Both restored homes will certainly take us back in time! So sorry that neither home is handicap accessible. You may need to be aware that there are 2-4 steps to enter the buildings. The Lane Home also has an upstairs and you may choose whether or not to tour that area. Lunch will be at Creekside Lodge. Stop by the Encore Desk (located in the Main Lobby) today to learn more and sign up to attend this very special event. This is the last day to register. Transportation space is limited. This is a great opportunity for fellowship, fun and education! Questions? Call Sue Hylton 317.839.2946.

PUMC Collecting School Supplies PUMC is showing God’s BIG Love to area students with school supplies needed for classes this fall. Donations of pencils, crayons, wide-ruled spiral notebooks, loose leaf notebook paper, solar calculators, glue sticks and backpacks may be left in the Donation Depot across from the church office (near door #2) or at any donation center near entrances at PUMC through the month of July. Thank you for serving the children of Plainfield with your generous donations.

Apply It: How can you build your character by working on your thoughts this week?

Character under Construction They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. That could be true. But I’m convinced that trials don’t build character as much as they reveal one’s character. How people respond to difficulties shows what they are made of— their character, if you will. That character is made, formed, or built in other ways. Our world seems overly concerned with how we appear, but God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). God is concerned with our character. Some suggest that your character is who you are or what you do when no-one is watching. So just how important is character? How might God help me develop my character in order to be a better, stronger person and a more faithful follower of Jesus? In this season of road construction, just how is the infrastructure of your soul assembled and maintained? In Classic worship during August, we will explore character in the series, “Character under Construction.” August 6: Controlling our Thoughts (Philippians 4:8) August 13: Guarding our Hearts (Proverbs 4:23) August 20: Keeping Good Company (Proverbs 1) August 27: Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
