Accept, Invite, Make Friends, Change Lives Luke 19:1-9

Everyone wants to feel accepted and be invited to participate and to belong to a community. It might be at school, on sports teams, at home, at work, or among friends. It is comforting and reassuring to feel wanted and welcome in our various circumstances. It might seem obvious that we should feel accepted at church even more than anywhere else. After all, the moment we understand we are fully accepted by Jesus and welcomed eternally by God, it should be the most defining and life changing moment we’ll ever experience. As participants in the Kingdom of God, how can we, as Christ followers, live out acceptance and share it with the same attitude of Christ who accepted and welcomed us? What would be the result if we did? A Rich Tax Collector Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through town. A man there named Zacchaeus, a ruler among tax collectors, was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but, being a short man, he couldn’t because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed up a sycamore tree so he could see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When Jesus came to that spot, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down at once. I must stay in your home today.” So Zacchaeus came down at once, happy to welcome Jesus. Everyone who saw this grumbled, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I repay them four times as much.” Jesus said to him, “Today, salvation has come to this household because he too is a son of Abraham. Luke 19:1-9 (CEB)

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

Doing Life Together We modern Americans are an independent lot. We take pride in forging our own trails, building our own future, and doing things the way we want to do them. But if we spend much time at all in the Gospel accounts of the life of Jesus, we see that the life of a follower of Jesus is not an independent life, but a life lived in community. Among the first things that Jesus did in his public ministry was gather a small group of people around him with whom to do life. They traveled together, prayed and worshiped together, served together, encouraged and challenged each other, and undoubtedly, even had fun together. In NewDay Praise Worship starting August 20, we will explore life in community, seeking out biblical encouragement for our life together in community and providing some practical ways to make it happen for each of us. PUMC offers many Bible studies, Sunday School classes, and small groups throughout the year. But each fall brings a special opportunity for study and spiritual growth with a new round of Disciple Bible Study Classes – a unique, intensive course in reading Scripture and building faith. In each Disciple course, groups of 10-12 people make a nine-month commitment to daily Bible reading and weekly class participation. Each weekly class session includes a short DVD presentation by a biblical scholar, and time for discussion and exploration of Scripture and of what it means to live as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. If you’ve never taken a Disciple course before, you’ll want to begin with Disciple I, “the red book.” Disciple I does not require any previous knowledge of the Bible. But whatever

understanding you bring is valued, and Disciple encourages you to grow. If you have already taken Disciple I, there are three other Disciple courses, each focused on a different section of the Bible. Beyond those, Disciple extends to a course on how Jesus Christ is portrayed in the four Gospels (Jesus in the Gospels), and a deep study of Christian doctrines and practices in Christian Believer. Information about Disciple Bible Study will be in the main lobby and on pumc.org during the month of August. Stop by the display table or the website to sign up. And if you see anyone with a colorful, round pin on their PUMC nametag, ask them what Disciple meant to them. They’ll be glad to share, and you’ll be encouraged to a deeper understanding of faith. For more information about Disciple Bible Study, or any adult Bible study, contact Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@ pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 226.

It’s Back to School Time in Bible Explorers! Children through Grade 5 are invited to a fun, interactive time of learning and growing in their faith every Sunday morning in PUMC’s Bible Explorers. Through games, stories, lessons and hands-on activities and crafts, student build a solid foundation on which to build a life-long relationship with Jesus. You can help that happen for children here at PUMC! Will you commit to serve in one of the following areas to show and share the love of Jesus with our students? It only takes one hour, once a month, during the school year to make a difference in a student’s life. Please consider serving in one of the following areas:

• Infant Toddler Room: The infant toddler room needs a servant volunteers

for 8:30 and 9:50 worship hours. In this room servants strive to make sure the little ones are happy and having a good time! It’s the first step in building a relationship of love and acceptance. This may require you to get on the floor and play cars or snuggle in a rocking chair and read books. Either way, it’s a joy to be with them!

• 3’s-PreK room: Slightly more engaging. With these children we have a little breakfast, teach a simple lesson, make a craft, and play games!

• Bible Explorers – K- Grade 5: Several servant volunteer positions are still available for this school year! Students gather in a large group area for breakfast, music and prayer, before going to their classrooms for age appropriate lessons, stories, crafts, and play.

To volunteer or learn more, please contact Amanda Norton, Director of Children’s Ministry, at anorton@pumc.org.
