Comfort: Too Much of a Good Thing? Revelation 3:14-21
Everyone wants stability. Knowing something of what to expect gives us confidence to face each new day. And we all want to be comfortable. We enjoy - and come to expect - the creature comforts of life. But comfort, stability and routine can lull us into thinking that the things we enjoy are enough; that there’s no need for additional effort, innovation, or passion for something new; that the everyday, ordinary lives we lead are sufficient. Even in our spiritual lives we find that it is easy to settle into a comfortable place. Weekly worship, a few dollars in the offering plate, and the occasional promise to pray for a friend becomes our spiritual routine and - while not inspiring or challenging - we decided somewhere along the line that it was enough. Even as we can become indifferent to the world around us, we can become indifferent to the work of the God in our lives. It’s ok to be comfortable, but don’t get too comfortable. You’ll miss out on some exciting things God has in store for you! The Message to the Church in Laodicea... “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the origin[a] of God’s creation: “I know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth. For you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.’ You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich; and white robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. Revelation 3:14-21 (NSRV)
We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.
Doing Life Together We modern Americans are an independent lot. We take pride in forging our own trails, building our own future, and doing things the way we want to do them. But if we spend much time at all in the Gospel accounts of the life of Jesus, we see that the life of a follower of Jesus is not an independent life, but a life lived in community. Among the first things that Jesus did in his public ministry was gather a small group of people around him with whom to do life. They traveled together, prayed and worshiped together, served together, encouraged and challenged each other, and undoubtedly, even had fun together. In NewDay Praise Worship starting August 20, we will explore life in community, seeking out biblical encouragement for our life together in community and providing some practical ways to make it happen for each of us. 6th Annual PUMC ONLINE AUCTION: We are enthusiastic about the mission and outreach done by PUMC youth and if you haven’t had a chance to do so already, we invite you to support our youth by donating items to the auction. Last year’s auction was not only fun, it was an effective way to fund important youth ministry. Your donations will give people the opportunity to bid on a wide selection of items ranging from gift baskets, dining, hand-crafted creation, gift cards, services, etc. Donation forms can be found online at pumc.org, at the Welcome Desk and in the church office.
PUMC offers many Bible studies, Sunday School classes, and small groups throughout the year. But each fall brings a special opportunity for study and spiritual growth with a new round of Disciple Bible Study Classes – a unique, intensive course in reading Scripture and building faith. In each Disciple course, groups of 10-12 people make a nine-month commitment to daily Bible reading and weekly class participation. Each weekly class session includes a short DVD presentation by a biblical scholar, and time for discussion and exploration of Scripture and of what it means to live as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. If you’ve never taken a Disciple course before, you’ll want to begin with Disciple I, “the red book.” Disciple I does not require any previous knowledge of the Bible. But whatever
understanding you bring is valued, and Disciple encourages you to grow. If you have already taken Disciple I, there are three other Disciple courses, each focused on a different section of the Bible. Beyond those, Disciple extends to a course on how Jesus Christ is portrayed in the four Gospels (Jesus in the Gospels), and a deep study of Christian doctrines and practices in Christian Believer. Information about Disciple Bible Study will be in the main lobby and on pumc.org during the month of August. Stop by the display table or the website to sign up. And if you see anyone with a colorful, round pin on their PUMC nametag, ask them what Disciple meant to them. They’ll be glad to share, and you’ll be encouraged to a deeper understanding of faith. For more information about Disciple Bible Study, or any adult Bible study, contact Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@ pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 226.
