MATTHEW 18:15-20

MATTHEW 18:15-20

August 27, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.

Doing Life Together Matthew 18:15-20

Entire industries have built up around organizing our lives. If you need help managing your home, office, calendar or basement, you can find someone to tell you how to do that - even do it for you! Messiness, it would seem, is an inherent part of life. And while it’s possible to organize and control the contents of a closet, it’s less possible to keep a life neat and tidy. The best laid plans get interrupted. Unexpected visits, illnesses, and opportunities demand our attention. And like a construction detour on a road trip, things out of our control can send us into unfamiliar territory. Being alone on a deserted road can be scary. But being lost with friends can be something of an adventure. When life sends you off course, it’s good to have friends along. Who are you riding through life with? Don’t go it alone, life is better together.

“If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” Matthew 18:15-20 (NSRV)

Presentation of Bibles to Third Graders Leader: Boys and girls, you have reached a special time in your church life. You have heard Bible stories read to you; you have looked at pictures in Bible storybooks; you have memorized Bible verses. But now, the time has come for you to have your very own Bible, to read these scriptures and to discover the Christian faith for yourself and to experience the truths of these stories. People: Your church family rejoices with you in this special time of Christian growth, and we now pass on to you this valuable treasure – the book of our faith. Leader: This special book will now be viewed in many ways, symbolized by the way in which it is wrapped. First, we see the Bible wrapped in brown paper, helping us to remember how very old the stories are. For thousands of years, even before the birth of Christ, the story has been told even though God’s people were unable to write it down. People: We thank God for this history of our faith! Leader: Here we see the Bible wrapped in gold. We think of gold as the most valuable thing there is, but this treasure is more valuable than gold because it is a source of wisdom and guidance for our lives. Even gold cannot buy these things. People: We praise God for such a treasure! Leader: Stories are an exciting part of our Bible, even more exciting than the comic strips we see around the Bible now. Stories about creation, Noah’s Ark, the healings of Jesus, or Paul’s journeys are the best reading we can find. People: We praise God for the stories of our Bible! Leader: The Bible is an inspired library of many books. It was written by people who had a special understanding of God. Therefore, it is not like any other book you will ever own. This white wrapping symbolizes the purity and truths contained in its pages. People: We give thanks to God for our Bible! Leader: Lastly, we see the Bible wrapped in red, a symbol representing the coming of God’s word to each of us. Thank you to third grade Bible Explorer teachers: Bethany Bamman, John & Jill Emmons, Lora Duncan, Connie Matthews, and Jennifer Woodard.

PUMC offers many Bible studies, Sunday School classes, and small groups throughout the year. But each fall brings a special opportunity for study and spiritual growth with a new round of Disciple Bible Study Classes – a unique, intensive course in reading Scripture and building faith. In each Disciple course, groups of 10-12 people make a nine-month commitment to daily Bible reading and weekly class participation. Each weekly class session includes a short DVD presentation by a biblical scholar, and time for discussion and exploration of Scripture and of what it means to live as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. If you’ve never taken a Disciple course before, you’ll want to begin with Disciple I, “the red book.” Disciple I does not require any previous knowledge of the Bible. But whatever

understanding you bring is valued, and Disciple encourages you to grow. If you have already taken Disciple I, there are three other Disciple courses, each focused on a different section of the Bible. Beyond those, Disciple extends to a course on how Jesus Christ is portrayed in the four Gospels (Jesus in the Gospels), and a deep study of Christian doctrines and practices in Christian Believer. Information about Disciple Bible Study will be in the main lobby and on pumc.org during the month of August. Stop by the display table or the website to sign up. And if you see anyone with a colorful, round pin on their PUMC nametag, ask them what Disciple meant to them. They’ll be glad to share, and you’ll be encouraged to a deeper understanding of faith. For more information about Disciple Bible Study, or any adult Bible study, contact Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 226.

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to answer your questions, and we have a gift for you, too! In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

Encore travels to Myers Dinner Theatre

Wednesday, September 6; leave PUMC at 10 a.m. Cost: $45 for meal, live show and transportation Based on the 1992 popular comedy of the same name, Sister Act: A Divine Musical Comedy follows the story of Deloris Van Cartier. Deloris’ desire to become a famous performer is sidetracked when she is forced into the witness protection program after witnessing a crime. Deloris Van Cartier performed regularly in a club owned by her boyfriend, a gangster named Curtis Shank. On one fateful night, Deloris stumbles upon Curtis and his posse in the midst of committing a murder. Petrified, Deloris runs to the police station immediately to get protection for herself. The only solution is the witness protection program. Deloris soon finds herself as far away from stardom as imaginable, in the religious sisterhood, The Holy Order of the Little Sisters. You won’t want to miss the hilarity that is sure to follow. This is the last day to sign up for this event at the Encore Desk located in the Main Lobby. Questions? Call Sue Hylton at 317.839.2946. We have room for 14 to ride the bus, but we will do our best to accommodate others via car-pooling. Let us know you will join the Encore group for this special event!
