Positive reinforcement accomplishes much more than negative reinforcement. When parents praise and affirm their children’s good behaviors, it helps more than complaining and enhances the relationship, too. Consider how it makes you feel to both receive and give compliments. Praising God is similar. Praise engages our minds as we consider God’s qualities and gifts. It also engages our emotions as we sing and express love for the Lord. It’s an ancient practice, going back to the earliest, formative events of the Old Testament. And Moses’ sister, Miriam, was leading the way to singing praise. It remains an important way to be in relationship with God.

Good morning, and welcome to Plainfield United Methodist Church! After taking a summer hiatus, we are pleased to recommence the Classic Worship Notes, your weekly guide to the music offered during each Sunday’s Classic Worship experience. Some days give you a behind-thescenes look into the composer’s life or the way that a hymn is constructed. Other days, we connect the music to the Scriptures or themes upon which the pastors preach. Our contributors—Jaime Carini, Michael Pettry, Sue Schultz, and Zoe Wiltrout—are delighted to author these notes to enhance our corporate worship. Today’s prelude is an arrangement by A. D. Miller upon the opening hymn, “Thine Be the Glory,” from the oratorio Judas Maccabeus by G. F. Handel. Swiss hymn composer, Henri A. Cesar Malan, wrote the music for the closing hymn, “Ask Ye What Great Thing I Know.” The instrumental Communion anthem features the hymn, “A Triune Prayer,” composed by Molly Ijames to this text: Blessed Father, hear our cry. Cast out sin, but draw us nigh. Not for merit we have none; For Your mercy, for Your Son. Blessed Jesus, make our plea. In Your name to God we flee; Thru Your blood we seek His face, By Your priesthood claim His grace. Blessed Spirit meet our need; In our silence intercede. Translate groans we cannot speak; Heal the broken, help the weak. Triune God, please grant our prayer As Your glory we declare. May Your promised kingdom come; May Your will on earth be done.
