PUMC welcomes the staff and faculty of Van Buren Elementary School to worship this weekend to celebrate their service to the children of Plainfield and to honor Children’s Sabbath, a day set aside on the church calendar to lift up the needs of children in the community and around the world. PUMC’s partnership with Van Buren Elementary School is just one way PUMC serves the children of Plainfield. In supporting and encouraging teachers and staff at Van Buren, we support and encourage the local children and families they serve. As PUMC serves as an encouraging partner with the Just Be Kind Kids Club, we empower children to change and bless their world. As PUMC serves community meals, helps local families with financial aid, and hosts early childhood and before & after school programs, we show the children of Plainfield the BIG Love of God. On Sunday morning worshipers will learn more about the students, staff, teachers and reach of Van Buren Elementary School as Principal Ray Helmuth brings the message. We hope worship and fellowship are a blessing to all, especially students and their families.

Time for Prayer Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Giving Because God gives, we give. Thank you for your generosity. Based on Psalm 34:6
Classic Worship Notes Welcome Brent te Velde, our first organ scholar, to the organ bench this morning. Brent has finished the coursework for his doctorate from IU and is currently living and working in South Carolina. As we celebrate the recent completion of our new pipe organ, we are joyful in bringing back to the organ bench organists from throughout PUMC’s history. Opening and closing worship today is J. S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D Major, BWV 532. As you listen to the Prelude, notice the many scale passages (an answer to why learning scales is important). A fugue is a piece where a short subject (theme) is interwoven between different voices. In the example you hear today, part of the subject is a series of eight sixteenth notes in ascending or descending skipping patterns. Listen for the pattern as it moves between the right hand, left hand, pedals or sandwiches between the two hands. Herbert Howells (1892-1983) began studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1912. Most of his early compositions were orchestral, with the exception of the first set of Psalm Preludes (191516). No. 1 is a contemplative setting of Psalm 34:6 “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles”. Today’s choral anthem is a setting of the muchloved Prayer of Saint Francis. This 13th century text was set to music by Texas-based composer Debra Scroggins who was commissioned by PUMC to pen this brand new composition in 2013. Bringing new musical works to life for other congregations to use in their worship is a special gift of PUMC to fellow Christians worldwide.
