Today we celebrate the many ministry servants that help with the ongoing, internal ministries of PUMC. Because of the faithful and generous service of so many, we offer high quality worship each week; faith formation experiences for all ages such as K-5 Bible Explorers, youth ministries, and adult learning classes and small groups; welcoming ministries such as greeters, ushers, and Sunday morning coffee; quality communication and administrative support; and so much more. Together we are more! We thank God for all the ways faith is lived out through this ministry. Be inspired to share your gifts so that others can have a full experience of the love and grace of God in Jesus Christ.

People: But God is behind it all. Leader: Each person is given something to do that shows us who God is. People: Everyone is included, and everyone benefits. Stan Storey, trumpet
PUMC welcomes trumpet player Stan Storey as guest musician for worship this morning. He will play several pieces on the trumpet, and one selection will be played on the flugelhorn. As you listen to the music produced by these related brass instruments, make note of the difference in color and timbre between the trumpet and the flugelhorn. The Adult Choir sings “Ye Servants of God,” an anthem with text by Charles Wesley, the brother of Methodism founder John Wesley. Charles wrote more than 6,000 hymns during his life – let us recall that a hymn actually is a reference to the text we sing, not the music to which the text is set. The hymn tune for the choral anthem is called Paderborn which is the name of a city in Germany where the tune’s arranger Sidney Nicholson heard it sung in a cathedral. The text was originally written not as a hymn of praise but as encouragement for believers facing persecution. The hymn first appeared in 1744 in a small collection of hymns titled Hymns for Times of Trouble and Persecution and was captioned “To be sung in tumult.” That year was a time of great tension and confusion in England and a time of bitter persecution for those new people called “Methodists.” Mobs broke up Methodist services and often hurled bricks, cabbages, and eggs at the preachers. Undaunted, the Wesleys maintained a noble spirit, producing the 1744 hymn collection to buoy the spirit of their followers.

Children’s Musical Sunday, September 24 during 9:50 Worship in Classic & NewDay Praise Worship
Transforming for Tomorrow Tomorrow always holds opportunity - for new things, for exciting events, and for hoped-for improvements and transformations. PUMC is looking towards tomorrow with the hope of improvements and transformations that will help us even more fully express the love and grace of Jesus to all who come to this church. The PUMC Church Council is recommending a list of building and property improvements and upgrades that are both needed and desired, as PUMC seeks its most faithful expression of God’s welcome and hospitality. In worship today Church Council Chair Nikki Shoultz will preview this initiative. In the coming days more details will be delivered via USPS mail to all PUMC members and digitally to everyone who already receives weekly and monthly digital newsletters. (Subscribe to these digital newsletters at pumc.org.) You are also invited to a Question & Answer Session about the proposed project on Sunday, September 24, 5:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. A summary of the project will be available this week in the church office, will be in the lobbies on Sunday mornings of September 24 and October 1, and will be attached to the digital deliveries this week. Then on Sunday, October 1, 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary, District Superintendent Jim Bushfield will preside at a Called Church Conference to consider and vote on the fund-raising campaign for the proposed projects. All full members of the congregation present at the October 1 Called Church Conference may vote. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of the opportunity before us. Questions may be raised at the September 24 meeting or by contacting Nikki Shoultz or the pastors through the church office.
Coming Soon! PUMC joins the Plainfield Federation of Churches in collecting coats, gloves, mittens, hats, and scarves, this fall for Hendricks County families in need. Collection boxes will be available at PUMC for these items after October 1. Thank you for serving the children of Plainfield and their families with the gift of warmth!
