How old were you the first time someone mistreated you and evoked your anger? Those moments and memories live large in our souls. There is something gratifying about being righteously indignant. But no matter how right we may be and how wrong the other may be, the anger and withholding of forgiveness is harmful. The first human brothers, Cain and Abel, could not get along. Cain murdered Abel. The twin brothers in today’s Old Testament story didn’t get along either. Their relationship has all the ingredients for a violent ending. Only theirs ends with forgiveness. I hope you can find that path with those who have wronged you.

Waltz in D-Flat Major “Minute Waltz”
Today is the second Sunday in our four-week worship series exploring key figures from the Old Testament. “Forgiveness” plays a key role in the scripture and message this morning, and much of the music in worship corresponds accordingly. As each week’s worship is crafted in the advance months and weeks, the pastoral and music staff explore theological, musical, artistic and personal insight encompassing the given day’s theme to craft a worship experience that speaks to your intellect and soul alike. The opening hymn features text that is more than 250 years old, and yet still speaks to modern Christians. Originally printed in German, the text was translated to English in 1854 and bears a couplet consistently ending with “May Jesus Christ be praised!” The closing hymn text was written by the blind 19th century female composer, Fanny Crosby. With more than 5,000 hymn texts to her authorship, Crosby’s unique poetic meter (11.11.11.11 with Refrain) is noted at the bottom of page 98 in the hymnal. This week, consider approaching this tune anew using the music on #98 and the text from #529, “How Firm a Foundation” with the “praise the lord” refrain as a musical devotional. The prelude and offertory were arranged by two organists whose names are synonymous with entertaining and energetic concerts! The late Virgil Fox and present-day Diane Bish are something of pipe organ superstars. Worship concludes with a familiar piece for the piano. Known to most as the “Minute Waltz,” the composition by Polish composer and virtuoso Romantic pianist Frédéric Chopin actually requires slightly more like two minutes to play. With a tempo marking of Molto vivace (very lively), the piece was named by the composer “The Little Dog Waltz” after watching a small dog chase its tail.

Small Group Call-Out Even a quick look at the Gospel accounts of Jesus reveals that the life of a follower of Jesus is not an independent life, but a life lived in community. Among the first things that Jesus did in his public ministry was gather a small group of people around him with whom to do life. They traveled together, prayed and worshiped together, served together, encouraged and challenged each other, and I’m certain, even had fun together. Life lived together with other followers of Jesus provides encouragement, support, friendship, and opportunities for spiritual growth. If you’d like to find a small group to be a part of, please mark your calendar for Friday, October 6, 6-7:30 p.m. for a Small Group Call Out. The evening will include pizza, experience a few typical small group elements, and provide an opportunity to join a small group if you like. Please RSVP to Pastor Elizabeth at egilbert@pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 244. And invite a friend to join you for this Small Group Call Out! It will be a fun evening!
Children’s Musical Today during 9:50 Worship in Classic & NewDay Praise Worship
Transforming for Tomorrow Tomorrow always holds opportunity - for new things, for exciting events, and for hoped-for improvements and transformations. PUMC is looking towards tomorrow with the hope of improvements and transformations that will help us even more fully express the love and grace of Jesus to all who come to this church. The PUMC Church Council is recommending a list of building and property improvements and upgrades that are both needed and desired, as PUMC seeks its most faithful expression of God’s welcome and hospitality. In worship today Finance Chair Bill Edie will preview this initiative. To learn more, you are invited to a Question & Answer Session about the proposed project on today, September 24, 5:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. A summary of the project is available this week in the church office, in the lobbies on Sunday mornings of September 24 and October 1, and online at pumc.link/T4T. Then on Sunday, October 1, 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary, District Superintendent Jim Bushfield will preside at a Called Church Conference to consider and vote on the fund-raising campaign for the proposed projects. All full members of the congregation present at the October 1 Called Church Conference may vote. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of the opportunity before us. Questions may be raised today at the September 24 meeting or by contacting Nikki Shoultz or the pastors through the church office.
