The acrobat crossed Niagara Falls pushing a wheel barrow on a tightrope. The acrobat asked who among the cheering crowd trusted that he could do it again. Everyone cheered. The acrobat replied by simply pointing to the wheel barrow and saying, “Get in.” If you trusted the acrobat, you would be able to ride in the wheel barrow across the falls. This is what the biblical word “faith” means. Faith is trusting God entirely with one’s welfare today and always. Sometimes it’s easy to trust God. Other times, our senses may pose a challenge. But Joshua teaches us that trusting God always wins the day. How are you being challenged to trust God more deeply?

October brings the month in which Protestant Christians across the world celebrate the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation. Almost 500 years ago, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed a list of 95 theses to the church door in Wittenberg. People today generally believe that Martin Luther wanted to revolt against the Roman Catholic church. Au contraire! Luther was engaging in the common academic practices of his day. He wanted to hold an open debate, which formed part of the university life. The church door to which he fixed his 95 theses also functioned as the community bulletin board. He wanted to discuss the practice of indulgences, which was the belief that if you gave money to the Catholic church, you could free a dead relative from purgatory and send them to heaven. Martin Luther had no idea what sequence of events he would unleash. He was brought before the pope at the Diet of Worms, excommunicated, and declared a heretic. Emperor Charles V sanctioned anyone to kill Luther without punishment. To celebrate the birth of the Reformation and the courage of Martin Luther, several Sundays will feature service music that was composed upon chorales adapted or written by Luther. The prelude by J. S. Bach, “Wir glauben all an einen Gott/I believe in One God,” is based upon music that Luther set to the tenets of the Christian faith. 500 years of Protestantism! How will you celebrate this heritage of spiritual freedom made possible by Christ’s death upon the cross?

Small Group Call-Out Even a quick look at the Gospel accounts of Jesus reveals that the life of a follower of Jesus is not an independent life, but a life lived in community. Among the first things that Jesus did in his public ministry was gather a small group of people around him with whom to do life. They traveled together, prayed and worshiped together, served together, encouraged and challenged each other, and I’m certain, even had fun together. Life lived together with other followers of Jesus provides encouragement, support, friendship, and opportunities for spiritual growth. If you’d like to find a small group to be a part of, please mark your calendar for Friday, October 6, 6-7:30 p.m. for a Small Group Call Out. The evening will include pizza, experience a few typical small group elements, and provide an opportunity to join a small group if you like. Please RSVP to Pastor Elizabeth at egilbert@pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 244. And invite a friend to join you for this Small Group Call Out! It will be a fun evening!

Transforming for Tomorrow

Conversation Meeting Oct. 1, 2:00 p.m. Tomorrow always holds opportunity - for new things, for exciting events, and for hoped-for improvements and transformations. PUMC is looking towards tomorrow with the hope of improvements and transformations that will help us even more fully express the love and grace of Jesus to all who come to this church. The PUMC Church Council is recommending a list of building and property improvements and upgrades that are both needed and desired, as PUMC seeks its most faithful expression of God’s welcome and hospitality. A summary of the project is available in the church office, in the lobbies, and online at pumc.link/T4T. A Special Called Church Conference had been called for Sunday, October 1, 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. The

Church Conference has been cancelled, so no vote will be taken. Instead of a Church Conference, there will be a meeting Sunday, October 1, 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. For those who care about the projects and want to provide input, please be present, 2:00 p.m. Oct. 1 in the sanctuary when we will be discussing the pathway forward with the Transforming for Tomorrow projects. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of the opportunity before us. Questions may be raised today at the 2:00 p.m. meeting or by contacting Nikki Shoultz or the pastors through the church office.
