“Schadenfreude” immigrated into English from German. It is “the pleasure derived by someone from another person’s misfortune”. We’ve all felt it. Like when the speeding driver who cut us off is pulled over by the police. But what happens when we feel that pleasure for a group or nation of people? I think the prophet, Jonah, was anticipating some schadenfreude with the people of Nineveh, who had invaded and destroyed his country. Jonah probably relished the thought that they might suffer. And when God wanted Jonah to offer them a way to be forgiven by God, he was not happy. Just how deep and wide is God’s grace? Grace never runs away from runaways.

God Be with You till We Meet Again

This morning marks the final Sunday of our worship series, “Key Lessons of the Old Testament” and the subject of our worship today is Jonah and the lessons he learned from God. Tammy Rawlinson composed the Bell Choir anthem, “Jonah and the Whale,” that we hear this morning. As Norm Geible narrates the familiar story of Jonah, listen for the ways the composer uses harmony and rhythm in the instrumental parts to support and illustrate the narration. Jester Hairston arranged the Adult Choir anthem, “In Dat Great Gittin’ Up Mornin’.” Hairston (19012000) was a composer, songwriter, conductor, singer, and actor. Born in North Carolina, Hairston grew up in Pennsylvania, hearing the stories of his grandmother, a former slave. Promising himself he would preserve this history through music, Hairston graduated from Tufts University in 1929, then attended Juilliard School. While singing with the Hall Johnson Choir in Harlem, Hairston had to shed his Boston accent and relearn the country accents of his parents and grandparents. Johnson told him cain’t and ain’t don’t mix with cahn’t and shahn’t in a spiritual. Fortunate to participate in a workshop led by Hairston many years ago, PUMC member Sue Schultz “remembers him insisting we sing the dialect as written in the music even though we were mostly a choir of Caucasian singers.” Listen for the dialect in the choral anthem this morning. Next Sunday begins a worship series titled “Feelin’ Groovy” that features the music of Simon & Garfunkel. Extend an invitation for others to join you in worship over the coming weeks – just one of the many aspects that make PUMC so special.
