October 15, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.
Playlist: Tell Your Heart to Beat Again Romans 8:18-28 Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert
Attributed to countless persons and tweeked in many ways, the old adage goes something like this... “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” In the song “Tell Your Heart to Beat Again” (written by Bernie Herms, Randy Phillips and Matthew West and recorded most recently by Danny Gokey) this saying is interpreted in this way... “Yesterday’s a closing door You don’t live there anymore Say goodbye to where you’ve been And tell your heart to beat again” In other words, don’t hold on to your past, get on with today. As with most pithy advice and sayings, these things are easier said than done. When all is well, we naturally leave yesterday behind, enjoy today and look fondly toward tomorrow. But what about when things are going all wrong? It seems impossible to let go of the pain of yesterday, to make any sense of today, and to feel hopeful about tomorrow. But hope isn’t a feeling. Hope is a choice. Even when we don’t feel like it, and even when we can’t see how our struggles will get worked out, we can choose hope. It has the power to transform our yesterdays, our todays, and our tomorrows. Tell your heart to beat again - choose hope.
We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to welcome you and answer your questions. In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.
Today’s Scripture Present Suffering and Future Glory I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:18-28 (NIV)
