Classic Worship Notes

October 15, 2017 | 8:30, 9:50 & 11:00 a.m.

Prelude

“From Heaven Above to Earth I Come” Heinrich Scheidemann

* Welcome & Greeting * Hymn of Praise 710

Faith of Our Fathers

* Call to Worship Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: All:

In the storms of life, God is our shelter. In the whirlwind of activity, God is our secure center. In the avalanches of tears and fears, God is our strong fortress. In all that seems uncertain, God is our steadfast strength and refuge. In the flood of tempting images and seductive words, God is a rock of stillness on which to stand. In the calm after the chaos, God is our guide and friend. In all the days of our lives, let God’s praise be on our lips.

Time for Prayer Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Giving

It took Paul Simon six months to write “The Sounds of Silence.” The first version was not well received but Columbia Records remixed the original soundtrack and the version we know today was released in 1965. It was Simon and Garfunkel’s first major hit, and made the top of the charts in 1966. Garfunkel once summed up the song’s meaning as “the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally, but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other.” The Adult Choir will be singing “Gloria” composed by Antonio Vivaldi in 1715 and the first movement of his larger composition Gloria for chorus, orchestra and soloists. He was a priest, a music teacher and a virtuoso violinist who composed this piece and many other sacred works for the renowned choir at a girls orphanage in Venice. This version of “Gloria” was rediscovered in the 1920’s and has become the most popular of Vivaldi’s vocal works.

Because God gives, we give. Thank you for your generosity.

Offertory * Hymn for Parting 438

Today marks the first Sunday of a four-week series titled “Feelin’ Groovy,” which features the music of a classic singer-songwriter duo. Those who lived through the “make love not war” era will remember the American folk-rock duo Simon and Garfunkel. They became one of the best-selling music groups in the 1960’s and icons for the counterculture social revolution of that decade. The duo started singing together while attending high school in Queens, New York, and had their first hit in 1957. They split and went their separate ways until folk music became more popular. In 1963, they collaborated again, publishing many top hits. Due to their rocky relationship which led to artistic disagreements, they broke up in 1970.
