* Call to Worship Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: All:

Creator Spirit, wellspring of our lives, as the refreshing rain falls on the just and the unjust alike, Refresh us with your mercy. As the river flows steadily on, defying all the odds of stone and water, Flow over every boundary and border that separates us from each other. As the waters of baptism washed and welcomed us, Renew us now in newness of life and unity of love. As the waters of the world bring tides of trouble, Hold us in the power and peace of your abiding presence. Amen.

Time for Prayer Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Welcome to worship this morning at Plainfield United Methodist Church! Today is the third Sunday of a four-week worship series titled “Feelin’ Groovy.” Leveraging the music of Simon & Garfunkel in this series, the Mixed Quartet sings “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” The 1971 Grammy Award winner for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, listen for the subtle influence of the gospel tradition within this folk-like song. A few centuries earlier, Johann Sebastian Bach was perfecting the art of fugue as a gifted composer and organist in Germany. Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue” in D Minor is divided between the prelude and the postlude in worship this morning due to its length. The Toccata is familiar to most of us, and the fugue employs imitation to feature a musical theme (or idea) in a number of different ways. Tune your ears to the theme and observe how it shows itself throughout the postlude. By the way, you may want to come forward to the organ console and get a better view of the impressive pedal work (played by the organist’s feet) during the postlude. In ancient times, people believed that as the planets revolved in the universe, they made music or harmony. This is the belief Maltbie Babcock, a Presbyterian minister who penned the text to the hymn “This Is My Father’s World,” referred to in the line, “and round me rings the music of the spheres.” You may wish to reference the text to this hymn (#144 in the hymnal) while the bells and flute play this morning’s anthem.

Angel Tree Mission

Tour Benjamin Harrison Home and Lunch at the Propylaeum.

PUMC shares God’s BIG Love with the children of incarcerated parents each Christmas through the Angel Tree (Prison Ministry) Mission as we provide gifts, cookies, and Bibles for these children. Members of the congregation choose a child from the “Angel Tree” in the main lobby, purchase and wrap the gift. Once returned and sorted, these gifts are delivered to the children on behalf of their incarcerated parent.

We will leave PUMC at 10 a.m. to tour President Benjamin Harrison’s home in Indianapolis. The tour will be led by PUMC’s Debbie Proctor. Cost is $8 per person. Lunch will be close by at the Propylaeum, a Victorian home with a history all its own. Lunch will be at your own expense. Stop by the Encore Desk in the Main Lobby to check out the menu and register October 29 and November 5.

There are many opportunities to be involved with this mission:
