Árger CÁËic Worship 8: 30, 9: 50 & 11:10 a.m.

PhiÃppians 3:17 - 4:1 Rev. CharÃe Wilfong

The parab of the cÄck recounts the story of the family member in current poËeËion of the heirloom, mechanical, chiming cÄck. It Äoked & sounded beautiful ~ when it worked. It was constantly being painstakingly transported to the repair shop. There were always repairs or maintenance required in order for the cÄck to run, chime, & keep time. Someone finaÀy asked, "Do you own the cÄck or does the cÄck own you?" That's not only a good question for high-maintenance items, but for aÀ of our poËeËions and aËets. Do they control our time, choices, & activities? Are we Árger and greater than our poËeËions? If they are not in charge, then who or what is directing our Ãves?

Classic Worship Notes We observe All Saints’ Day in both word and song. All Saints’ Day falls on November 1st, the day after Halloween. We can see the connection between these two celebrations in their alternate names: All Hallow’s Eve and All Hallow’s Day. Through word, we honor those saints in our own congregation who have died within the past year by commemorating them in the Memorial Scroll. By word and song, we proclaim their triumph over death through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We open the service with Hymn #711, “For All the Saints,” (tune: Sine Nomine) and close with Hymn #702, “Sing with All the Saints in Glory.” Both hymns contain themes of spiritual warfare, victory in battle, eternal life, and heavenly glory. The postlude music serves as our final tribute to the saints. The “Toccata” from Variations on ‘King’s Lynn’ by Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) features the English hymn tune, “King’s Lynn.” This tune is associated with texts that, like our hymns, convey images of Christian victory. “O God of Earth and Altar,” written in the plural voice instead of the singular, beseeches God with a corporate plea for the nation’s salvation from the damnation that awaits evildoers. As all classes are saved, “prince and priest and thrall,” the people once buffeted by “the profanation of honor, and the sword,” become, “a living nation, a single sword to thee [God].” Like “Sine Nomine,” “King’s Lynn” was arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams for The English Hymnal (1906).

Angel Tree Mission | Though December 11

P

UMC shares God’s BIG Love with the children of incarcerated parents each Christmas through the Angel Tree (Prison Ministry) Mission as we provide gifts, cookies, and Bibles for these children. Members of the congregation choose a child from the “Angel Tree” in the main lobby, purchase and wrap the gift. Once returned and sorted, these gifts are delivered to the children on behalf of their incarcerated parent. Be a part of showing God’s BIG Love... Choose a name and buy a gift. In the main lobby in the coming weeks (Nov. 20, 27, and Dec. 4) pick a name off of the Angel tree and purchase a gift using the info on the angel. Wrap and return the item to PUMC by noon December 11. Bake Cookies. Two and one-half dozen homemade cookies are delivered to each Angel Tree home. Deliver cookies to PUMC by 5 p.m., December 16. Volunteer to sort or distribute gifts and cookies Sunday, December 11, 1 p.m. If you have questions please contact Steve Brizendine at angeltree@ pumc.org or through the church office. “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15
