All good gifts around us are from heaven above, so thank our God For joy in living And patience in trouble; For rainbows after clouds And moonlight on the darkest night; For wisdom to walk the right path And peace to calm anxious worry; For birthday surprises and things in all sizes. All good gifts around us are from heaven above-Day after day, an abundance of God’s love, Morning by morning, new signs of blessing: A gentle rain, an awesome sunset, A friend’s embrace, a child’s smile, A new insight, a sense of peace, A shared meal, a treasured moment. All around us and deep within us are signs of God’s presence. How can we not sing of God’s faithfulness? All good gifts around us are from heaven above, So let our song arise and give thanks for all God’s love!

From Consumer to Steward Rev. Greg McGarvy Matthew 25:14-29

We have been anticipating Consecration Sunday with excitement for a number of weeks. It’s finally here! You have chosen to support PUMC and our ministries with your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness. Thank you! God is calling us to grow in grace and gratitude. Today, we will celebrate God’s gifts. We will celebrate our fellowship as God’s people. We will enjoy lunch together. And we will each prayerfully respond to the call of God to grow spiritually in our financial giving to the ministries of PUMC.

Classic Worship Notes The music in today’s Consecration Worship speaks to our ability to praise God through song and instruments. Reverend. F. Pratt Green was commissioned in 1971 to write a text for C. V. Stanford’s tune, Engleberg, for the London conference of the Methodist Church Music Society. “When in Our Music God Is Glorified” speaks to the glorification of God, witness to truth, and an enhanced level of worship, all leading to “Alleluia,” “Praise God.” The second anthem by the Adult Choir, “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” was originally written by Robert Robinson in 1758. PUMC commissioned American composer Molly Ijames in 2014 to arrange this text and tune for choir, brass quintet, and piano in honor of Ted and Lynn Blosser’s ministry. Because all music was once new, this congregation occasionally commissions new works of music to further expand the reach of music in Christian worship across the country and around the world. You will hear a pulsating rhythmic line underlying the voices as the melody moves between each section of the choir. Edward Perronet, writer of “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name,” was a colleague of Methodism founder John Wesley. Apparently, Edward was a bit of a rebel, finding the Church of England much too restrictive for his liking. Eventually Perronet had a falling out with Wesley as well when told he couldn’t administer the sacraments. Perronet eventually left the Methodist movement, but never wavered in his efforts to evangelize for God, evident in the text of this hymn.

Consecration Sunday Guest Preacher Consecration Sunday guest preacher, Rev. Greg McGarvey, served forty years as a United Methodist Pastor in Indiana; thirty of those years as a senior pastor in larger churches. Greg now serves as a Ministry Strategist with Horizons Stewardship. He believes financial leadership is grounded in biblical teachings that are authenticated by a personal modeling of generosity. He and his wife, Peggy, experience the joy of generosity through leadership giving. Greg has extensive experience in stewardship development, capital campaigns and vision discernment. Throughout Greg’s ministry, each church experienced financial growth. During his tenure, the last two churches he served turned unmanageable debt into “debt free” status. Greg holds degrees from DePauw University and Asbury Theological Seminary. Greg and Peggy have two adult sons, live in Indianapolis, Indiana, and enjoy travel and sailing. PUMC thanks Rev. McGarvey for his presence and ministry today.

Today’s Scripture “For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. Matthew 25:14-29 (NRSV)

PUMC Homeless Outreach Feeds Bodies and Spirits This report is from the Homeless Outreach team, led this particular evening by Rick Jones, following their regular Monday evening outreach on October 2. If you would like to participate with or donate to this outreach, please visit pumc.org or contact leadership through the church office. Pastor Bob Preusch and three youth, middle school girls, joined me delivering food Monday night. We handed out all of our food by 7:30 p.m. From Tornado to Bill at the boarding house, Willard Park and then Scott at the Twin Aire, we were finding plenty to feed. Nancy was in good spirits under the bridge. Along with the river camps we found people again at the new camps, Diamond Chain, Raymond Street bridge, and under I 65 on Southern Ave. Several hungry dogs loved our dog food and treats, as well, last night. Ricky and some of the people at the river Fern camp have moved on. Of course I just bought Ricky a new sketch book. We’ll cross paths again and he will get it then. With just over ten meals left we headed to Illinois Street and stopped to feed those on the corners of Illinois and Maryland when a patron in the corner restaurant came out and handed Bob a $20 bill, thanking us for what we do. All of these last few meals were handed out on the two corners at this intersection, and then we were finished. Bob and I had a wonderful evening talking about our faith perspectives. The man that gave Bob the cash validated what I had just shared with him, and that is that even those who are on the street corners who are begging may or may not be as in need as those in the camps, when we pull up by the fancy schmancy restaurants to feed the “pan handlers,” we have a large audience who sees Christians serving the least of these. These onlookers see faith in action. God can do much with this type of witness! God Bless, Rick

PUMC VITAL SIGNS

PUMC has a wonderful mission opportunity this Advent season in that we, in conjunction with The Friends and their Plainfield Meeting House, will once again be hosting homeless families, but this time we will be hosting during Christmas week from Sunday December 24th, through Sunday December 31st. We will need volunteers to step up and

fix dinner meals for Sunday evening through Saturday of that week. In addition, we will need those who can spend time with the families that we are hosting to sign up. This will be a great opportunity for our PUMC families, especially for those who have children, to introduce to your kids the importance of caring for those who are less fortunate. We are also working with the Friends to make Christmas morning special. We will decorate their living space, fix a breakfast feast, and we are going to coattail with our Angel Tree Mission by placing angels on the tree after all of the Angel Tree children have been cared for. The new angels will be for the children of our guests. If you are interested in helping, you can contact Mary Raver at mraver@pumc.org or Rick Jones at rjones@pumc.org. IN-PERSON
