Three Rules

Micah 6:1-8 Rev. Steve Ailes The news headlines are disturbing. Conflict and anger seem to dominate our social media feeds. We long for a more peaceful world and wonder if there is any hope for a better way forward. The prophet Micah conveyed God’s desire for God’s people “...to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God.” (Micah 6:8) Jesus told his followers: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27, ESV) This is often paraphrased as: Love God, love others. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, gave us three simple rules to follow: Do no harm; do good; stay in love with God. There are many conflicts that seem to defy resolution, many arguments that can’t be won. But one thing seems clear: as followers of Jesus, the way forward is the way of love.

Today’s Scripture Hear what the Lord says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. “O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the Lord.” And the people respond.... “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:1- 8 (NRSV)

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. A PUMC member is there to welcome you and answer your questions. In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

Blessing Bags

November 26 Thanksgiving Sunday. Bring your Blessing Bags to worship on Sunday, November 26, to share about God’s blessings in your life and Glory Sightings (the ways you’ve seen God at work for good) you’ve encountered throughout the year. Blessing bags are available in the church office, the sanctuary, the Worship Annex, and all lobbies.

Angel Tree Mission PUMC shares God’s BIG Love with the children of incarcerated parents each Christmas through the Angel Tree (Prison Ministry) Mission as we provide gifts, cookies, and Bibles for these children. Members of the congregation choose a child from the “Angel Tree” in the main lobby, purchase and wrap the gift. Once returned and sorted, these gifts are delivered to the children There are many opportunities to be involved with this mission: Choose a name and buy a gift. In the main lobby in the coming weeks (Nov. 19 & 26 and Dec 3) pick a name off of the Angel tree and purchase a gift using the info on the angel. Wrap the gift in a box. Return the single, wrapped item to PUMC by noon December 10. Bake Cookies. Two and one-half dozen homemade cookies are delivered to each Angel Tree home. The kids love to eat them while opening their Christmas gifts! Deliver cookies to PUMC by 5 p.m., December 15. Volunteer to sort or distribute gifts and cookies Sunday, December 10, 1 p.m. If you have questions please contact Steve Brizendine through the church office. “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15

Statistical Report on Consecration Sunday Results A total of 151 giving units (husbands and wives or single persons) completed Estimate of Giving Cards this year. A total of 74 of these giving units increased their financial commitment above their last year’s amount. A total of 151 giving units present to fill out Estimate of Giving Cards today committed a total of $628,297 Based on last year’s giving records, we can expect to receive $362,781 during the coming year from people who have consistent giving patterns during the past twelve months but are not present today. Based on the average total of loose offerings during the past three years, we can expect to receive $9,170 during the coming year from that source. This gives us a grand total of $1,000,248 anticipated income for the next twelve months. The total income for our general operating budget during the last twelve months was $1,019,476. Next year, we can expect our operating budget income to decrease by $19,228 This is a 1.92 percent decrease in total giving from last year. This has been an unusual year with a loss of $50,000 in giving due to death and relocation of PUMC members. Even so, year to date we have received $10,000 more in giving than for the same period in 2016. And again, nearly 50% of those who have completed a pledge card increased their pledge for 2018. We have a challenge and an opportunity in 2018. Thank you for your prayerful stewardship of your giving and for your generosity. If you would still like to participate and complete an Estimate of Giving Card, please find one at the back of the sanctuary, the Welcome Center desk, or the Church Office. Additional updates will be made as additional commitments are received.
