Do you save for a rainy day? Is your spare tire ready to be used? Did you check the smoke detectors when you turned your clocks back? Is your snow blower ready for winter? These things prepare us for trouble. But, do we tend to our emotional and spiritual life with as much care? Do we get enough rest, exercise, and good company with friends? Have we learned how to keep our calm with that one annoying family member who will be there for Thanksgiving? Most importantly, are we “prayed up? Do we pray regularly in such a way that will enable us to connect with God when things get difficult?

Sweet Hour of Prayer vs 1 & 3

Time for Prayer Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Giving

Because God gives, we give. Thank you for your generosity.

(11:00 a.m.) “Sweet Hour of Prayer”

* Hymn for Parting 404

Every Time I Feel the Spirit

Sweet Hour of Prayer! This hymn speaks to the heart of one of the most intrinsic Christian practices: prayer. The author of this poem was William W. Walford (1772-1850), a blind woodcarver and a very religious, knowledgeable Christian. One day in 1845, a pastor was visiting and Walford shared a poem about prayer which he had perfected unto memory. Walford asked the pastor to write it down for him. In doing so, the pastor saw the beauty of the poem and sent it off for publishing. It was not until a number of years after Walford’s death that the poem was set to music by William Bradbury, and has become a hymn favorite even today. The adult and handbell choirs will be sharing an arrangement of the hymn written by Charles Wesley in 1746, “Rejoice, the Lord Is King.” Charles was the brother of John Wesley and together they founded Methodism. Charles wrote hundreds of hymns and was one of the most prolific English poets of his time. As churches built bell towers in the 1500-1600s, the bell ringers began to form choirs who rang increasingly difficult patterns. Practice was difficult in cold, drafty towers, and of course it was noisy! The small number of bells, and the strength and stamina required to move the heavy bells, limited the performances. Handbells as we know them today, were originally developed to allow the tower ringers to practice the patterns (which had to be memorized) indoors in relative comfort. Over the years, handbell ringing has developed into an art form of its own, including through PUMC’s vibrant handbell music ministry.

Statistical Report on Consecration Sunday Results A total of 151 giving units (husbands and wives or single persons) completed Estimate of Giving Cards this year. A total of 74 of these giving units increased their financial commitment above their last year’s amount. A total of 151 giving units present to fill out Estimate of Giving Cards today committed a total of $628,297 Based on last year’s giving records, we can expect to receive $362,781 during the coming year from people who have consistent giving patterns during the past twelve months but are not present today. Based on the average total of loose offerings during the past three years, we can expect to receive $9,170 during the coming year from that source. This gives us a grand total of $1,000,248 anticipated income for the next twelve months. The total income for our general operating budget during the last twelve months was $1,019,476. Next year, we can expect our operating budget income to decrease by $19,228 This is a 1.92 percent decrease in total giving from last year. This has been an unusual year with a loss of $50,000 in giving due to death and relocation of PUMC members. Even so, year to date we have received $10,000 more in giving than for the same period in 2016. And again, nearly 50% of those who have completed a pledge card increased their pledge for 2018. We have a challenge and an opportunity in 2018. Thank you for your prayerful stewardship of your giving and for your generosity. If you would still like to participate and complete an Estimate of Giving Card, please find one at the back of the sanctuary, the Welcome Center desk, or the Church Office. Additional updates will be made as additional commitments are received.

Beef House Rolls Pickup For those who ordered Beef House Rolls, strawberry jam and apple butter, they will be available for pick up in the South Lobby today. There will be a few extra rolls available for purchase if you did not previously place an order. The price for a dozen rolls is $8.

LAST SATURDAY LUNCH You are invited on Saturday, November 25, for a nourishing lunch and some great fellowship. Lunch is provided by members of PUMC. This is a free meal to all the community served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Clayton Hall. Please enter through Door 14.

Angel Tree Mission PUMC shares God’s BIG Love with the children of incarcerated parents each Chr istmas through the Angel Tree (Prison Ministry) Mission as we provide gifts, cookies, and Bibles for these children. Members of the congregation choose a child from the “Angel Tree” in the main lobby, purchase and wrap the gift. Once returned and sorted, these gifts are delivered to the children

Everyone is invited to the Th3rd Sunday Lunch, today. Lunch is served after 11:00 Classic Worship (about 12:15 p.m.) in Clayton Hall. Please bring a dish to share (if you’re able) and join others for food, fellowship, and fun! Tea and lemonade will be provided for everyone and dishes and silverware will be used from the PUMC kitchen.

There are many opportunities to be involved with this mission: Choose a name and buy a gift. In the main lobby in the coming weeks (Nov. 19 & 26 and Dec 3) pick a name off of the Angel tree and purchase a gift using the info on the angel. Wrap the gift in a box. Return the single, wrapped item to PUMC by noon December 10. Bake Cookies. Two and one-half dozen homemade c ook ie s a re delivered to each Angel Tree home. The kids love to eat them while opening their Christmas gifts! Deliver cookies to PUMC by 5 p.m., December 15. Volunteer to sort or distribute gifts and cookies Sunday, December 10, 1 p.m. If you have questions please contact Steve Brizendine through the church office. “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15
