The United States contains a diversity of political opinion as does PUMC and every other congregation. We support our government, elected leaders, representatives, and officials. It was an historic and unusual election season. You may be confused and bewildered by the reactions of family, friends, neighbors, and society at large. Today, we want to provide some comfort, care, and direction. Jesus Christ was King and Lord both before, during, and after the election. And Hebrews 13:8 declares the good news that, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.� Following Jesus is always our best way forward.

“We Gather Together”, originating during the Dutch battle for liberation from Spain, is a prayer asking for God’s blessing, guidance, protection through all tribulation. “Thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!” First appearing in a 1627 collection of Dutch patriotic songs, Theodore Baker translated the hymn into English in 1894. Eduard Kremser translated the lyrics into Latin and German in 1877, and arranged the folk hymn into the hymn tune we know. Henry Alford, 1810-1871, a prolific hymnist and poet, assembler of several collections of hymns, and translator of hymns, wrote “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come”, one of four Alford hymns that have survived. Bearing the tune name St. George’s Windsor, the text was set to music by George J. Elvey, 1816-1893, during his half-century as “master of the boys” and organist at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, England. As the final hymn of the morning’s worship begins, be sure to notice the completed trumpet en chamade pipes found in the antiphonal pipe organ in the back of the sanctuary. Completed and installed just this week, these fanfare trumpets are used to make a joyful noise throughout the postlude as well.

Angel Tree Mission | Though December 11

UMC shares God’s BIG Love with the children of incarcerated parents each Christmas through the Angel Tree (Prison Ministry) Mission as we provide gifts, cookies, and Bibles for these children. Members of the congregation choose a child from the “Angel Tree” in PUMC’s main lobby, purchase and wrap the gift. Once returned and sorted, these gifts are delivered to the children on behalf of their incarcerated parent. Be a part of showing God’s BIG Love... Choose a name and buy a gift. In the main lobby in the coming weeks (Nov. 20, 27, and Dec. 4) pick a name off of the Angel tree and purchase a gift using the info on the angel. Wrap and return the item to PUMC by noon December 11. Bake Cookies. Two and one-half dozen homemade cookies are delivered to each Angel Tree home. Deliver cookies to PUMC by 5 p.m., December 16.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is served at noon. We will be honored to have master-carver and story teller, David Babb, share his wood carving skills, creativity and knowledge with us. Mitten Trees at PUMC
M
itten Trees are now up at PUMC near the church office entrance (door #2) and in the Main Lobby. These trees are ready to receive your donations of mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves to keep children warm. Donated items will be delivered to Fletcher Place and Indianapolis Public School #34 at the end of November by PUMC’s United Methodist Women’s groups. Thank you for sharing the warmth of God’s BIG Love in this way.
