Isaiah 63:7-9

“I don’t have any bills in my wallet small enough for the vending machine. I bought too many groceries for my refrigerator.” Weird Al Yankovic didn’t make up the term, “First-World Problems”, but he sure sang about them. This is the time of year that most Americans get in touch with how good we have it in this life. And that’s certainly a key element in being thankf ul. Besides, it’s really unhealthy to complain about all the negatives in life. Even so, genuine biblical g r at it u d e is about something else altogether. And guess what. It’s not about us.

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

* Call to Worship Leader: We now enter into God’s holy presence. People: Come, let us worship. Let us bow before the Lord, our God. Leader: It is fitting that we come with thanksgiving. People: God deserves our songs of praise. Leader: For the Lord is a great God. People: The Lord is Creator of all — the highest mountains and the depths of the earth. Leader: The vast waters and the dry land were all God’s idea. People: This holy one is our God, and we are God’s people. Leader: We are called and chosen, fed and nurtured as the Good Shepherd’s flock. People: We listen today for the voice of our Shepherd. Leader: We come with open ears and attentive hearts. All: Let us worship the Lord, our God! —Based on Psalm 95 Anthem

Welcome to worship at Plainfield United Methodist Church. This congregation has a long tradition of high-quality, meaningful and diverse music in worship, and this Sunday is no exception. Music ranges from triumphant repertoire for the pipe organ, southern gospel, and of course, congregational singing. The prelude and the opening hymn both feature the hymn tune “St. George’s Windsor,” a familiar and traditional tune closely associated with Thanksgiving Sunday in the United States. The tune was composed by George Elvey and published in 1858, and is named after St. George’s chapel, which is located in Windsor Castle and is a primary residence of Queen Elizabeth II. Hardly a chapel by our modern nomenclature, the Gothic structure is elegant and elevates our human minds toward the divine through its scale and craftsmanship. Worship concludes with a setting of the hymn we know as “Now Thank We All Our God” (which is printed in its original German title in the Order of Worship) arranged by Sigfried Karg-Elert. The hymn tune is found in the composition, no doubt, but it is cleverly obscured for much of the piece. Pay a visit to the organ console after worship and and ask Organ Scholar Jaime Carini to point out the notes that comprise that chorale tune. Today marks the final Sunday of the Christian calendar. The Christian year begins anew next Sunday with the first Sunday of Advent. The four Sundays of Advent are a time of preparation that lead into Christmastide. Consider making a pact with yourself, your family or your prayer partner at church to join us each of the Sundays of Advent.

UPDATED: Statistical Report on Consecration Sunday Results Thank you for your generous and sustained giving to PUMC and its ministries through the Basic Ministry Budget. Based on responses to Consecration Sunday (November 12) and best estimates of unpledged giving along with loose offerings, 2018 giving in support of the Basic Ministry Budget will be approximately $1,005,729. Our 2017 Basic Ministry (operating) Budget is $1,052,434. This budget was balanced to last year’s estimated income based on Consecration Sunday responses. For 2018, we currently anticipate falling $46,705 short of the 2017 budget. This has been an unusual year with a loss of $50,000 in giving due to death and relocation of PUMC members. Nearly 50% of those who have completed a pledge card increased their pledge for 2018. We have a challenge and an opportunity in 2018. The Finance Committee and Council will be working to prepare a budget that will meet our estimated 2018 giving, but doing this while maintaining all of our current ministry will be difficult. We hope not to make significant changes in things that we provide and enjoy as a congregation. Has God called you to reconsider your pledge or to make a special one-time gift? Thank you for your prayerful stewardship of your giving and for your generosity. If you would still like to participate and complete an Estimate of Giving Card, please find one at the back of the sanctuary, the Welcome Center desk, or the Church Office. Additional updates will be made as additional commitments are received.

Transforming for Tomorrow

Blessing Bags

November 26 Thanksgiving Sunday. In worship today, we thank God for the many blessings and recount Glory Sightings (the ways you’ve seen God at work for good) you’ve encountered throughout the year. Blessing bags are available in the church office, the sanctuary, the Worship Annex, and all lobbies.

For all members interested in upgrading, reorganizing or remodeling the kitchen, there will be an open meeting on Wednesday December 6th at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at the church. All are welcome to share their concerns and ideas for this space. Problems listed at this meeting will be given to the Transforming for Tomorrow committee to develop solutions for each problem. Please direct all questions to Bill Edie or Linda Cook through the church office.

Angel Tree Mission PUMC shares God’s BIG Love with the children of incarcerated parents each Chr istmas through the Angel Tree (Prison Ministry) Mission as we provide gifts, cookies, and Bibles for these children. Members of the congregation choose a child from the “Angel Tree” in the main lobby, purchase and wrap the gift. Once returned and sorted, these gifts are delivered to the children There are many opportunities to be involved with this mission: Choose a name and buy a gift. In the main lobby in the coming weeks (Nov. 19 & 26 and Dec 3) pick a name off of the Angel tree and purchase a gift using the info on the angel. Wrap the gift in a box. Return the single, wrapped item to PUMC by noon December 10. Bake Cookies. Two and one-half dozen homemade c ook ie s a re delivered to each Angel Tree home. The kids love to eat them while opening their Christmas gifts! Deliver cookies to PUMC by 5 p.m., December 15. Volunteer to sort or distribute gifts and cookies Sunday, December 10, 1 p.m. If you have questions please contact Steve Brizendine through the church office. “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15
