Through
Mary’s Eyes
Rev. Ken Loudenback
Acts 1:6-14 We begin the season of Advent which means "coming." It is a time of patient anticipation of the coming of our Lord, Savior and King. Today we look at it through the eyes of Mary from a different perspective. The perspective of her witness at the end of her life. The perspective of seeing the resurrected Jesus after going through the torment of witnessing the pain and suffering of her son on the cross. Seeing Jesus resurrected gives us light for our way (path) and hope to endure the tough times. Thus our mission, like Mary's mission, is to share that Truth, Way and Life with Others.

Acts 1:6-14
Classic Worship Notes Today is the first of four Sundays in Advent. Derived from the Latin word adventus, Advent means “coming.” It is the season of preparation for Christmas, not the celebration of Christmas, similar to the relationship between Lent & Easter. One tradition of the Advent season is lighting candles in an Advent wreath which is a wreath with candles added to it. There are three purple candles, one pink, and one white. One candle, each representing something different, is lit on each Sunday of Advent, making the Advent wreath brighter and brighter as Christmas approaches. The first candle lit is purple and is sometimes called the prophecy candle. It represents the hope and expectation for the coming Messiah. The prelude features a work by Johann Sebastian Bach, a German composer from the Baroque period who was a gifted organist in addition to his composition gifts. Literally translating to “Awake, the voice is calling us,” the piece is based on a Lutheran chorale tune (hymn) which Bach employs prominently in both of his choral cantatas (works for choir, soloists, and instruments) and for his Schübler Chorales (pieces for solo pipe organ) as we hear today in worship. Advent is rich with theological significance which will be emphasized with Scripture readings and symbolic practices like the advent wreath. These help focus our attention on the first- and secondcoming of Christ. The Advent season is a somber time of personal reflection, hope and longing, and joyful remembrance and expectation of the coming of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
