Awake
Luke 2:1-20 Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert In 1865, an Englishman named William Chatterton Dix penned the words to a poem entitled “The Manger Throne.” A few years later the first three stanzas of that poem were set to the music of an English traditional folk song called “Greensleeves.” That song soon became known as the beloved Christmas carol “What Child Is This?” This combination of poetry and music first was published in the United Kingdom in 1871. For close to a century and a half the question found in the title of this carol has become an annual reminder that something significant happened on that night in Bethlehem as someone significant lay wrapped in swaddling clothes in a manger. This child would change the world forever; but what child is this? In the biblical Christmas story, the shepherds are among the first to learn of the birth of the baby Jesus. During the night the angels visited the shepherds and told them of Jesus’ birth. A shepherd’s job stretches on day and night without much to break up the monotony. No doubt it is difficult to stay away through the night to watch for thieves and wolves. But had they been asleep, they would have missed the angels’ message and the birth altogether. Staying awake, though, they were able to know about and meet the Christ child. What threatens your experience of Christmas? Will you miss the visit from the divine because you are too busy, too distracted, too stressed, or too tired? Stay awake this season so that you can discover for yourself, “What child is this?”
Today’s Scripture The Birth of Jesus In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. The Shepherds and the Angels In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. Luke 2:1-20 (NRSV)

Christmas in Plainfield
Advent
Vespers Advent Vespers with Jerry Gillooly As part of PUMC’s celebration of the completion of the pipe organ construction, we have invited back to the church all people who have served as organist over the years. We are honored to welcome organist Jerry Gillooly back to PUMC this month. Jerry will play a one-hour pipe organ recital of music for Advent and Christmas on Sunday, December 10, 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The concert is free and open to all people. This event also marks 60 years of music ministry by Gillooly, and you may consider this a good opportunity to bring others from throughout the community to enjoy the music and celebrate Jerry’s fine musical ministry.
You are invited to join friends from the community at the Plainfield Church Federation’s “Christmas in Plainfield.” On Friday, December 8 at the Plainfield High School Auditorium, at 7pm, groups from ten area churches will present holiday music. Invite friends and family to join you at “Christmas in Plainfield” to welcome the Christmas season.
Worship Schedule Changes at PUMC in 2018! The New Year will bring a new schedule to PUMC’s worship ministry. In PUMC’s desire to give the greatest opportunity for people to experience the full love and grace of Jesus through the worship ministries of PUMC - without burdening worship and ministry teams - January will see an adjusted worship schedule. This new schedule will:
• Maintain PUMC’s high quality Classic Worship ministry • Open up more opportunity for people to experience NewDay Praise Worship • Add a creative opportunity for people to experience a message of hope from the Word
This new schedule will not:
• Significantly disrupt the majority of worship and Sunday educational programming (Adult Sunday School and Adult Small Groups, Children’s programming, youth worship)
• Burden leadership and serving teams with additional duties Beginning January 7, 2018, PUMC’s Sunday morning worship schedule will be adjusted in the following ways:
• Classic Worship will be at 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. • NewDay Praise Worship will be at 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. • A new “Preaching Chapel” will be held in the sanctuary at 11:15 a.m. • This 30-minutes experience will include a hymn, prayer, and message in a more casual, intimate style
• This experience will not require tech or media support, and limited hospitality and music support.
• Children and Youth programming will be 10-11:00 a.m. Existing Sunday Adult Groups and Classes may choose to meet at any time that best suits the members of their group, being mindful that children and youth programming and support is primarily at 10-11:00 a.m. Note: Infant and Toddler care will continue to be available throughout the morning for 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. Worship and for 11:15 a.m. Preaching Chapel. PUMC’s Worship ministry is of the highest quality, engaging, and relevant. Invite and bring a friend to join you for worship in January so that they can also experience the full embrace of the grace and love of God in Jesus Christ through worship at PUMC.
