It’s a familiar story. Almost too familiar. Jesus Christ came into the world as a baby. There were angel visits, prophesies, shepherds, kings, and a room in a stable where he was born. The season leading up to Christmas is called “Advent.” It’s a time of preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Just like the Jew ish people anticipated the arrival of the promised Anointed One, during Advent we anticipate celebrating his arrival. To help us experience the powerful impact of God coming into the world in Jesus, we will consider the story from the point of view of Jesus’ step-father, Joseph the carpenter. Yes, it’s a big, cosmic story. And God did it for “the world.” At the same time, God gave the greatest gift of all for you—for individuals. So rather than a panorama view, we will travel through Advent this year with a close-up view “on the ground” so to speak. With some help from a new resource from Adam Hamilton, we will consider Christmas through Joseph’s eyes.

Communion Anthem * Hymn for Parting 211
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
Sue Schultz & Zoe Wiltrout, piano
The prelude, a Noël by Louis-Claude Daquin (1694-1722; organist at Notre Dame in Paris), the choral anthem, “O Little Town of Bethlehem” by Robert Powell, and the postlude, “Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella,” continue the theme of light shining in the darkness. The noël tradition in France began as a secular tradition of singing songs to honor Christ’s birth, but by Daquin’s time organists were improvising on these tunes during masses. Both the noël and the choral anthem will utilize the antiphonal organ in the back of the church. As we adorn the sanctuary with Advent decorations, we adorn our worship, too, with music that celebrates the presence of Christ. The communion music—both the Hymn of Preparation and the Anthem—refer to Christ’s name, “Emmanuel,” which means, “God with us.” As you eat the bread and drink the cup, meditate upon your communion with Christ and with His body, the Church. At this moment, you partake in a festal feast with every single Christian in this sanctuary and throughout the world!
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
vs 1, 2, 5 & 7
* Dismissal & Blessing * Postlude
To celebrate the arrival of the Advent season, which marks the beginning of the new year in the church calendar, we adorn the sanctuary with familiar decorations. These remind us to make time to reflect upon who God is and what He has done for us through the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. The green Advent wreath with its purple and pink candles serves as a visual expression that Christ entered the dark world to bring light and life to all who believe in Him.

Worship Schedule Changes at PUMC in 2018! The New Year will bring a new schedule to PUMC’s worship ministry. In PUMC’s desire to give the greatest opportunity for people to experience the full love and grace of Jesus through the worship ministries of PUMC - without burdening worship and ministry teams - January will see an adjusted worship schedule. This new schedule will:
• Maintain PUMC’s high quality Classic Worship ministry • Open up more opportunity for people to experience NewDay Praise Worship
• Add a creative opportunity for people to experience a message of hope from the Word
This new schedule will not:
• Significantly disrupt the majority of worship and Sunday
educational programming (Adult Sunday School and Adult Small Groups, Children’s programming, youth worship)
• Burden leadership and serving teams with additional duties Beginning January 7, 2018, PUMC’s Sunday morning worship schedule will be adjusted in the following ways:
• Classic Worship will be at 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. • NewDay Praise Worship will be at 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. • A new “Preaching Chapel” will be held in the sanctuary at 11:15 a.m.
• This 30-minutes experience will include a hymn, prayer, and message in a more casual, intimate style
• This experience will not require tech or media support, and limited hospitality and music support.
• Children and Youth programming will be 10-11:00 a.m. Existing Sunday Adult Groups and Classes may choose to meet at any time that best suits the members of their group, being mindful that children and youth programming and support is primarily at 10-11:00 a.m. Note: Infant and Toddler care will continue to be available throughout the morning for 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. Worship and for 11:15 a.m. Preaching Chapel. PUMC’s Worship ministry is of the highest quality, engaging, and relevant. Invite and bring a friend to join you for worship in January so that they can also experience the full embrace of the grace and love of God in Jesus Christ through worship at PUMC.

Advent
Vespers Advent Vespers with Jerry Gillooly As part of PUMC’s celebration of the completion of the pipe organ construction, we have invited back to the church all people who have served as organist over the years. We are honored to welcome organist Jerry Gillooly back to PUMC this month. Jerry will play a one-hour pipe organ recital of music for Advent and Christmas on Sunday, December 10, 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The concert is free and open to all people. This event also marks 60 years of music ministry by Gillooly, and you may consider this a good opportunity to bring others from throughout the community to enjoy the music and celebrate Jerry’s fine musical ministry.
Sunday, December 10, 1 p.m. If you have questions please contact Steve Brizendine through the church office. “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15
The Longest Night You are invited to the Longest Night worship on December 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This worship invites those who struggle with darkness and grief during this traditional ‘season of joy’ to find comfort in a worship experience that recognizes both their loss and the hope we all have in Jesus.
Christmas in Plainfield You are invited to join friends from the community at the Plainfield Church Federation’s “Christmas in Plainfield.” On Friday, December 8 at the Plainfield High School Auditorium, at 7pm, groups from ten area churches will present holiday music. Invite friends and family to join you at “Christmas in Plainfield” to welcome the Christmas season.
