We know that Jesus’ birth was God’s promise from centuries before he was born. Mary, his Mother, was told about his birth by an angel before she was with child. Jesus is God’s gi and God’s promise from long ago. Like all good Christmas gis, God was planning Jesus’ arrival, mission, and ministry from the very beginning. Was Jesus’ death on the cross—his crucifixion—part of the plan? And why talk about that as we’re about to celebrate his birthday? Signs that only Mary can tell us make it clear that Jesus was born to die for our salvaon. It’s part of the gi. And it’s part of Christmas.

Hymn of Preparation 206 I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light Holy Communion Plates are available at the front of the sanctuary to receive your tithes,

The closing hymn, #213, “Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates,” was originally written for Advent season. With its encouragement to “Fling wide the portals” of our hearts because the “King of Kings is drawing near,” this hymn communicates expectation that the Jesus is arriving soon. Thus, it can also be sung on Palm Sunday.

Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates Declamation on “Gloria”

Michael Bedford Jaime Carini, Pipe Organ

(*) asterisk indicates time for persons, who are able, to stand.

The prelude features four Christmas carols from throughout the Western world, many of which are familiar to our ears. “Away in a Manger” features music by an American composer, followed by a 16th century French carol. The German “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” precedes a Swiss noel written by a virtuosic French organist. Our opening hymn, #254 “We Three Kings,” references the supernatural star that guided the wise men on their journey to Bethlehem. The light of this “Star of wonder” and the Advent candles point to Christ, who is the light of the world. The Scripture reading from Luke 2:2240, describes Simeon’s encounter with Christ, a promise that had been foretold to Simeon by the Holy Spirit. After eagerly expecting God to fulfill this promise, Simeon sees Jesus and responds with a hymn of praise, “Nunc dimittis.” The child who would become a light to the Gentiles and glory to the Israelites now calls us to become children of the light.

The declamatory postlude by Dr. Michael Bedford is on the tune, “Gloria” (also known as “Les anges dans nos campagnes”). See if you can recognize the tune when it appears. Hint: It features angels!
