Wise

Matthew 2:1-12 Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert Words composed by Englishman William Chatterton Dix in 1865 help us consider the annual question posed during the Christmas season: What child is this? Within the lyrics of this famous Christmas carol about the baby Jesus who was born in the manger in Bethlehem, we encounter characters and their actions. Although wise men or magi specifically are not mentioned as characters in the carol, their notifiable actions of worship and generosity lead the lyrics of the third stanza.... “So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh…” The wise men of the original Christmas story studied the stories about, sought after, and eventually found the Christ child. Having found him, they worshiped him and gave him valuable gifts. What are you seeking this Christmas? The perfect gift for your spouse or your children? The most beautiful light display on the block? Or simply a family Christmas without any arguments. Consider joining the wise men in search of the only thing worthy of our worship this season.

Today’s Scripture In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men[a] from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising,[b] and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah[c] was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd[d] my people Israel.’” Then Herod secretly called for the wise men[e] and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. Matthew 2:1-12 (NRSV)

Members of the congregation choose a child from the “Angel Tree” in the main lobby, purchase and wrap the gift. Once returned and sorted, these gifts are delivered to the children There are many opportunities to be involved with this mission: Bake Cookies. Two and one-half dozen homemade cookies are delivered to each Angel Tree home. The kids love to eat them while opening their Christmas gifts! Deliver cookies to PUMC by 5 p.m., December 15. Volunteer to sort or distribute gifts and cookies Sunday, December 10, 1 p.m. If you have questions please contact Steve Brizendine through the church office. “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15

The Longest Night You are invited to the Longest Night worship on December 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This worship invites those who struggle with darkness and grief during this traditional ‘season of joy’ to find comfort in a worship experience that recognizes both their loss and the hope we all have in Jesus.

Thank you Amanda Norton In gratitude for her ministry and service over the last several years, on December 4, PUMC received Amanda Norton’s, Director of Children’s Ministries, resignation. PUMC thanks Amanda for her service and wishes her well in her next ventures. After the first of the year, leadership will consider the needs of the program and seek paid staff to fill those needs. If you have any questions, please be in touch with any pastor or with Staff Parish Relations Chair, Bob Milligan, through the church office.
