O Come, All Ye Faithful

On this second Sunday of Advent, we continue looking at Jesus through the eyes of his earthly father, Joseph. The Adult Choir sings an arrangement of “Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine,” and today’s setting by Howard Helvey of this traditional German carol features a four-hand piano accompaniment. “Angels From the Realms of Glory” was written by James Montgomery, prolific English poet and hymnist who was a contemporary of Charles Wesley. “With the faith of a strong man, [Montgomery] united the beauty and simplicity of a child in his texts,” suggested one source. During the season of Advent we sing of angels, yet during another season of preparation, Lent, we sing a darker Montgomery text within “Go To Dark Gethsemane.” Christmas Eve at PUMC brings a new worship opportunity this year! The 5:00 p.m. Christmas Eve worship features a service of Lessons and Carols. King’s College, Cambridge, England, held the first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 1918 and ever since the opening hymn has been “Once In Royal David’s City.” Over time carols have been changed and new ones introduced. The service has been broadcast every year since 1928, with the exception of 1930. Regardless of where the service is heard or what adaptations are made, the lessons are the important message. Consider attending this service to experience the words of the Bible accompanied by carols of the season. And a reminder that former PUMC organist Jerry Gillooly will present an Advent recital this afternoon at 4:00 in the sanctuary as part of the PUMC Concert Series. Family and friends are invited to attend this free event celebrating the music of the season.

Advent

Vespers Advent Vespers with Jerry Gillooly As part of PUMC’s celebration of the completion of the pipe organ construction, we have invited back to the church all people who have served as organist over the years. We are honored to welcome organist Jerry Gillooly back to PUMC today. Jerry will play a one-hour pipe organ recital of music for Advent and Christmas today, December 10, 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The concert is free and open to all people. This event also marks 60 years of music ministry by Gillooly, and you may consider this a good opportunity to bring others from throughout the community to enjoy the music and celebrate Jerry’s fine musical ministry.

Pizza Fundraiser The Adult mission trip to Costa Rica is making fresh 14 inch “Home Fire” pizzas just in time for New Years. Orders will be taken at the North & South PUMC Lobby entrances after worship on December 10, 17, and 24. Pizzas are being made fresh on December 30 and will be available for pickup on December 30 and 31.

Bishop’s Christmas Offering for Children Each year on Christmas Sunday PUMC receives an offering designated as the Bishop’s Offering for Children. Special envelopes are included in today’s worship folder to receive this offering. Ministries to children in Indiana, other parts of the USA, as well as around the world receive funds from this special gift. Because God gives, we give. Thank you for your generosity.

Once returned and sorted, these gifts are delivered to the children There are many opportunities to be involved with this mission: Bake Cookies. Two and one-half dozen homemade c ook ie s a re delivered to each Angel Tree home. The kids love to eat them while opening their Christmas gifts! Deliver cookies to PUMC by 5 p.m., December 15. The Longest Night You are invited to the Longest Night worship on December 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Worship Schedule Changes at PUMC in 2018! The New Year will bring a new schedule to PUMC’s worship ministry. In PUMC’s desire to give the greatest opportunity for people to experience the full love and grace of Jesus through the worship ministries of PUMC - without burdening worship and ministry teams - January will see an adjusted worship schedule. Beginning January 7, 2018, PUMC’s Sunday morning worship schedule will be adjusted in the following ways:

• Classic Worship will be at 8:45 and 10:00 a.m.

• NewDay Praise Worship

will be at 8:45 and 10:00 a.m.

• A new “Preaching Chapel”

will be held in the sanctuary at 11:15 a.m.

• T h i s

30 -minute experience will include a hymn, prayer, and message in a more casual, intimate style

• This experience will not

require tech or media support, and limited hospitality and music support.

• Chi ld ren

a nd Yout h programming will be 1011:00 a.m.

This worship invites those who struggle with darkness and grief during this traditional ‘season of joy’ to find comfort in a worship experience that recognizes both their loss and the hope we all have in Jesus.

Existing Sunday Adult Groups and Classes may choose to meet at any time that best suits the members of their group, being mindful that children and youth programming and support is primarily at 10-11:00 a.m.

PUMC Hosts Family Promise in December

Note: Infant and Toddler care will continue to be available throughout the morning for 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. Worship and for 11:15 a.m. Preaching Chapel.

PUMC joins the Plainfield Friends’ congregation to host Hendricks County Family Promise (Homeless Outreach) the week of December 24-31. Special activities and events are being planned to make this a special time for families in the program. Please visit the display in the Main Lobby to donate or serve. Thank you for showing God’s BIG Love to our homeless neighbors this Christmas!

PUMC’s Worship ministry is of the highest quality, engaging, and relevant. Invite and bring a friend to join you for worship in January so that they can also experience the full embrace of the grace and love of God in Jesus Christ through worship at PUMC.
