LUKE 2:41-52

REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

Have you ever received a Christmas gi that kept giving all year? The “Fruit of the Month” club reminds you of the giver throughout the year. You remember them and their generosity beyond the holiday. Many gis are blessings for more than just the moment we receive them. God’s greatest gi to us, Jesus Christ, means more than just our forgiveness, salvaon, and assurance of eternal life in heaven. Jesus is more than just an important person whose birth we celebrate. Jesus is God’s gi that keeps on giving through his connued presence with us and his instrucon in living. Unwrap all that Jesus gives and use it daily.

Classic Worship Notes John Mason Neale translated the 12th Century Latin text “Veni, Veni, Immanuel” into English in 1851. The melody that is commonly used is thought to be French in origin. Note the various forms of address used: Emmanuel (Hebrew: “God is with us”), Wisdom, Lord, Root of Jesse, Key of David, Dayspring, and Desire. Holly and ivy are two Christian symbols used throughout this season. Their origins were possibly related to ancient fertility mythology associating holly/male and ivy/female. In modern usage, the carol speaks to our association with Jesus: Holly bearing a pure white flower, blood red berry, sharp thorny prickle, and gall-bitter bark. Ivy, mentioned only in verse one, needs to cling for support as it grows as we need to cling to God for support as we grow. The tradition of the Advent Wreath began in the time of Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation. Lighting a new candle each week helps us focus on the four virtues Jesus brings us: Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace. Today we celebrate Joy, the joy of expectation, the joy of love, the joy of the endless possibilities we encounter as we accept Jesus into our lives, and the joy we receive as we live in peace with each other.

Beginning in early December you will be able to choose “the gift” you wish at a display in the main lobby at PUMC. With your check to “PUMC” you may choose one of the following to give as a gift to a friend or loved one:

PUMC is taking advantage of energy rebates available before the end of the year to upgrade lighting throughout the building. These upgrades will make for significant energy savings in the coming years. Additional savings are available if we provide the labor to do the installation ourselves. Will you help?

Family Promise (Hendricks County Homeless Mission) PUMC Family Assistance (to aid local families in need) PUMC Last Saturday Lunch Feeding the Hungry, PUMC’s Homeless Outreach Madina Village School in Sierra Leone. With your purchase you will receive an attractive Christmas card with a printed description of the project which you may give or send to the person you want to honor. Thank you for your special gift this Christmas!

Th3rd Sunday Lunch Everyone is invited to the Th3rd Sunday Lunch, December 18. Lunch is served after the 11:10 Classic Worship (about 12:15 p.m.) in Clayton Hall. If you are able, please bring a dish to share and join others for food, fellowship, and fun! Tea and lemonade will be provided for everyone and dishes and silverware will be used from the PUMC kitchen.

On Monday, December 12, Steve Manning, PUMC Facilities Manager, is coordinating the first work day for this project. Tasks include: carrying light loads, removing trash, sweeping and clean-up, and simple electrical work. There is a job for everyone who wants to help. Additional work days will be scheduled throughout the month. If you can help on Dec. 12 or anytime during the month, please mark your Connection Card this morning and Steve will be in touch. Thank you for helping PUMC realize thousands of dollars in savings and be more earth-friendly. Contact Steve directly at smanning@pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 231.
