Thirsty

Luke 1:26-35 Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert The opening lines to William Chatterton Dix’s famous Christmas carol ask a poignant question, “What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping?” Dix goes on to answer this question in part during the last line of the repeated chorus. This child is “the babe, the son of Mary.” The One that the angel said would be conceived by the Holy Spirit is also the son of a very ordinary, very human, young woman. Jesus is not just the Son of God, the Prince of Peace, and the Wonderful Counselor that we sing about and worship at Christmas. Jesus is also the One who walked the same dusty roads that humans walk. He knows real physical pain, real emotional angst, real spiritual need. He has felt the same hunger, knows that same thirst, that we have. God came to earth in Jesus not just to bring a cosmic realignment of all of creation. God came to bring real human comfort and care, to feed our hungry spirits, and to quench our deepest longings. If your Christmas list this year includes wishes for things that can’t be wrapped and put under the tree... healing, hope, comfort, community, acceptance... know that the child we worship brings all that and more. What child is this? This is the One who knows you like no other because he has been where you are.

Today’s Scripture In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born[c] will be holy; he will be called Son of God. Luke 1:26-35 (NRSV)

A PUMC member is there to welcome you and answer your questions. In Clayton Hall (north end of building) you’ll find refreshments and a place to chat and meet people. Please make yourself at home.

Pizza Fundraiser The Adult mission trip to Costa Rica is making fresh 14 inch “Home Fire” pizzas just in time for New Years. Orders will be taken at the North & South PUMC Lobby entrances after worship on December 10, 17, and 24. Th3rd Sunday Lunch Today All are invited to December’s Th3rd Sunday Lunch. Lunch is served after 11:00 a.m. Classic Worship, about 12:15 p.m., in Clayton Hall. If you are able, please bring a dish to share and join others for food, fellowship, and fun! Tea and lemonade will be provided for everyone and dishes and silverware will be used from the PUMC kitchen.

Mitten Tree Gloves, mittens, hats, and scarves are still needed to keep children warm this winter. You may place them in the Donation Depot. Thank you for showing God’s Big Love in this way.

Worship Schedule Changes at PUMC in 2018! The New Year will bring a new schedule to PUMC’s worship ministry. In PUMC’s desire to give the greatest opportunity for people to experience the full love and grace of Jesus through the worship ministries of PUMC - without burdening worship and ministry teams - January will see an adjusted worship schedule. Beginning January 7, 2018, PUMC’s Sunday morning worship schedule will be adjusted in the following ways:

• Classic Worship will be at 8:45 and 10:00 a.m.

• NewDay Praise Worship will be at 8:45 and 10:00 a.m.

• A new “Preaching Chapel” will be held in the sanctuary at 11:15 a.m.

• This 30-minute experience

will include a hymn, prayer, and message in a more casual, intimate style

• Children and Youth programming will be 10-11:00 a.m.

Existing Sunday Adult Groups and Classes may choose to meet at any time that best suits the members of their group, being mindful that children and youth programming and support is primarily at 10-11:00 a.m. Note: Infant and Toddler care will continue to be available throughout the morning for 8:45 and 10:00 a.m. Worship and for 11:15 a.m. Preaching Chapel. PUMC’s Worship ministry is of the highest quality, engaging, and relevant. Invite and bring a friend to join you for worship in January so that they can also experience the full embrace of the grace and love of God in Jesus Christ through worship at PUMC.

• This experience will not require

tech or media support, and limited hospitality and music support.

Snow Removal Needed PUMC’s Weekday Children’s Ministry is in need of someone to, on the rare occasion that we receive two or more inches of snow overnight on a school night, clear walks prior to 6 a.m. so that students and families can safely enter the church building when they arrive. This task comes with a small payment for the service. If you can be that person to help with this task just a few mornings this winter, please contact Carissa Wooden, PUMC Kids Connection Director, at 317.839.2319, ext. 238. Thank you for serving the children of Plainfield!

The Longest Night You are invited to the Longest Night worship on December 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This worship invites those who struggle with darkness and grief during this traditional ‘season of joy’ to find comfort in a worship experience that recognizes both their loss and the hope we all have in Jesus.
