Were you ever asked to do something that seemed difficult? Did you shy away and avoid it? Did you question it? Did you rise to the challenge? Sometimes we’re asked to do great or difficult things. Other times, events put us in the unavoidable position to step out of our comfort zones and take decisive action. Have you ever felt God’s call on your life in some way? God calls each of us. And where God calls, God provides the way forward. Honoring God’s call is always the way to become who God intends us to be. And that’s a gift. Pray about it.

Classic Worship Notes Today marks the third Sunday of the season of Advent. One tradition of the Advent season is lighting candles in an Advent wreath, which is an ordinary wreath of especially meaningful candles added to it. There are three purple candles, one pink, and one white. A candle, representing something different, is lit on each Sunday of Advent making the Advent wreath brighter and brighter as Christmas approaches. Three of the candles represent hope, peace and love. They are purple because that color carries religious significance as a color of prayer and penitence. The white candle represents Christ and will be lit on Christmas Eve. The candle to be lit on the third Sunday of Advent is pink, representing joy. There is joy in looking forward to the celebration of Christmas. There is joy in remembering the birth of Jesus on the first Christmas. The joy also extends to anticipation of the coming of Christ for a second time. The closing hymn, “Angels We Have Heard on High” features text by Irish Catholic priest James Chadwick, and music based on a traditional French carol. Although considered a classic to most of us today, the hymn tune was arranged for congregational hymn singing relatively recently, in 1937. The text that concludes each verse of the hymn – Gloria in excelsis Deo! – translates to “Glory to God in the highest!” Christmas Eve at PUMC includes a wide offering of worship opportunities for you, your family and the entire community. Make note in your worship folder of the Christmas Eve evening worship schedule, and invite others to experience the gift of Christmas at PUMC.
