Luke 1:26-38

Rev. Charlie Wilfong

Full of Grace

Small children learn the sentence, “I do it myself!” very early. And self-reliance is certainly an important part of growing up. When that sentence changes in the mouth of an adult to, “I don’t need any help!” it’s close to pride. Pride often foolishly rejects assistance. It works the same in our spiritual lives. Foolish pride can even reject the help that God offers. That help is grace. God’s grace is wonderful. In short, it’s the good things God does for us that we don’t deserve. Don’t fill your heart so full of pride that there is no room for God. If you let God’s grace in, nothing is impossible!

Classic Worship Notes “Nothing will be impossible with God,” says the angel Gabriel to Mary when he announces that she will be the mother of the Son of God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Luke 1:37). This miraculous news filled Mary with fear and confusion, but as a “servant of the Lord,” she chose to submit her troubled spirit to God’s will. Mary’s obedient acquiescence allowed her to participate in His plan for salvation. Through her, the joy of salvation entered the troubled world and brought blessing to all nations. Our music on this last Sunday of Advent celebrates these truths. The prelude on “Angels from the Realms of Glory” sings of the angels’ role in spreading the news of Christ’s birth and tells of their bringing this news to the shepherds in the field. “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” which we sing as the opening hymn, #234, and meditate upon during the postlude, exhorts us to sing and to exult over Christ, the Lord. Hymn #219, the response to the sermon, celebrates the arrival of Christ in the flesh. It encourages us to honor Him with physical gifts—here, gold, frankincense, and myrrh—and, most importantly, to own Him in our hearts. The bells’ anthem, “Come, Thou Long-expected Jesus,” reminds that we are still participating in the expectation of Advent, while our closing hymn, #246, “Joy to the World,” celebrates the fulfillment of Advent with these words: “…the Lord is come.”

Membership Discovery The Membership Discovery Class provides an overview of the ministry and mission of PUMC and helps participants find meaningful places to connect within the church. Participants are invited to consider membership at the conclusion of the class. Please contact Pastor Elizabeth Gilbert at egilbert@pumc.org to learn more or to register for the next class.

We are so glad to welcome you to worship this morning! If you are new to PUMC, you are invited to stop by the Welcome Center located in the south lobby. Th3rd Sunday Lunch

All Hands - and Helpers - on Deck!

Everyone is invited to the Th3rd Sunday Lunch today. Lunch is served after the 11:10 Classic Worship (about 12:15 p.m.) in Clayton Hall. If you are able, please bring a dish to share and join others for food, fellowship, and fun!

Thank you to all who have helped PUMC take advantage of energy rebates available before the end of the year by providing labor and expertise to upgrade lighting throughout the building! A recent work day made significant progress because of the willing help of about 30 people. These upgrades will make for significant energy savings in the coming years. Additional savings are available if we can get even more lights changed out before the end of December. Will you help?

Tea and lemonade will be provided for everyone and dishes and silverware will be used from the PUMC kitchen.

Alternative Christmas Gifts Again this year the PUMC Mission Committee is offering a Christmas shopping option that is quick and easy – and supports PUMC mission! Beginning in early December you will be able to choose “the gift” you wish at a display in the main lobby at PUMC. With your check to “PUMC” you may choose one of the following to give as a gift to a friend or loved one: Family Promise (Hendricks County Homeless Mission) PUMC Family Assistance (to aid local families in need) PUMC Last Saturday Lunch Feeding the Hungry, PUMC’s Homeless Outreach Madina Village School in Sierra Leone. With your purchase you will receive an attractive Christmas card with a printed description of the project which you may give or send to the person you want to honor. Thank you for your special gift this Christmas!

On December 27, 28, and 29, Steve Manning, PUMC Facilities Manager, is coordinating work days for this project. Tasks include: carrying light loads, removing trash, sweeping and clean-up, and simple electrical work. The work schedule is flexible these days, and there is a job for everyone who wants to help. If you can help on any of these dates, please mark your Connection Card this morning and Steve will be in touch. Thank you for helping PUMC realize thousands of dollars in savings and be more earthfriendly. Contact Steve directly at smanning@pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 231
