December 31, 2017 NewDay Praise Worship - 9:50 a.m.
Remembering the Future 1 Chronicles 16:4-12, 34-36 Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert
Our days often pass so quickly that it’s difficult to remember what happened last month, let alone one year ago. That’s one reason ‘re-cap’ shows this time of year are so engaging... they remind us of all that has transpired and outline the year with some chronological markers. And if we’ve had significant events happen in our own lives this last year, we might mark other events in relation to those. Everything we remember about the year might be “pre-said event” or “post-said event.” A year in review is all about the calendar and what took place during the last 365 days. But the last year has been more than stand-out events and turning the pages of a calendar. God has been at work to shape and guide us in all that we’ve experienced. If you created your own personal 2017 ‘re-cap’ video, how many stories of God’s presence and participation in your life would it include? And how will you be ready to participate with God in 2018? One way to become ready to encounter God in 2018 is to reflect on what those encounters may have been in 2017. How have you experienced God in the last year? How did those experiences change or transform your life? Which moments in your life this last year seemed like times when God used you in service to others? Looking back helps us look forward. Here’s to thanking God for 2017 and looking forward to 2018!
Today’s Scripture
2017 In Review
He appointed certain of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the Lord, to invoke, to thank, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel. Asaph was the chief, and second to him Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, with harps and lyres; Asaph was to sound the cymbals, and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel were to blow trumpets regularly, before the ark of the covenant of God.
How have you experienced God in the last year?
Then on that day David first appointed the singing of praises to the Lord by Asaph and his kindred.
How did those experiences change or transform your life?
O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples. Sing to him, sing praises to him, tell of all his wonderful works. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence continually. Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered... O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.
Which moments in your life this last year seemed like times when God used you in service to others?
Say also: “Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and rescue us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. 1 Chronicles 16:4-12, 34-36 (NRSV) Give God praise and thanks for the ways he has been at work for good in and through you!
