Where Are You? Ma hew 2:13-23

If you have ever played “hide and seek” with a toddler, you know that the big fun for them is not to hide, but to be found. They love it and want to play it again and again— especially with their favorite people. As we grow up, we learn more about the hiding part. We hide from what is uncomfortable or unpleasant. Self-preservation is strong and there is a time to flee. Refugees today and in all places and times understand this. Regardless how menacing the world becomes, we still want to be found by one who can comfort us. And to that One, we are always “found”.

Classic Worship Notes The music in worship at Plainfield United Methodist Church consistently spans a range of eras, styles and genres and this morning’s music is perfectly illustrative: Jazz, Bach, Wesley and more. Today we welcome Dr. Charles Goehring, organist, pianist and conductor who has served some of the nation’s largest congregations though music ministry. Opening hymn “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” includes text by Charles Wesley – brother of Methodist founder John Wesley – with music initially written for secular use by Felix Mendelssohn. Make particular notice of the myriad names used in the three verses of this Christmas carol referring to the Christ Child, and consider incorporating those into your daily prayer practices this Christmastide. Johann Sebastian Bach – among the most influential composers of Western Culture – wrote more than 200 cantatas, sacred compositions typically for chorus, instruments and vocal soloists of around 25 minutes. “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” is one movement from cantata 147 which was written in 1716. In its original form, this famous movement featured violin, viola, double bass, oboe, trumpet and choir, but a transcription in the 1920s propelled this music into considerably more widespread use. Worship concludes with a keystone work of the pipe organ repertory by 20th century American composer Richard Purvis – listen for the creative presentation of beloved carols in this arrangement. A native of San Francisco, Purvis studied music at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and then served in World War II. Even during his service, it is said he found time to compose music, writing one of his more famous works while in a foxhole. Upon return to the States, he served as organist and master of choristers at Grace Cathedral, the stately seat of the episcopal church, situated picturesquely on the top of Nob Hill in “the city by the bay.”

Jesus Christ Superstar at PUMC

Football Sunday at PUMC! Sunday, February 4, is game day across America. Invite a friend to NewDay Praise Worship (8:45 and 10:00 a.m.) to hear from some NFL players about their life with Christ, on and off the field. And help make this a ‘souper’ Sunday for some hungry people. Bring canned soup to donate to the local food pantry.

PUMC VITAL SIGNS

As part of the PUMC Concert Series, we will present the musical Jesus Christ Superstar – the original Broadway orchestration – live in both Classic Worship Services on the first Sunday of March. Before the curtain goes up on the classic musical, we will hold auditions for leads and supporting roles in the musical. All people from PUMC and from the entire community are welcome to audition on Saturday, January 27 if interested in lead roles, and you can email Director of Music Michael Pettry (mpettry@pumc. org) for more information. A complete rehearsal schedule for the chorus, leads and orchestra musicians can be found on PUMC’s website. Mark your calendar to attend the performances and spread the word to persons in the community who may wish to sing in the production.
