Plainfield United Methodist Church Easter Sunday Worship April 16, 2017
Classic Worship (Sanctuary): 8:30, 9:50 & 11:10 a.m. NewDay Praise Worship (Worship Annex): 9:50 a.m.
A LETTER FROM PASTOR CHARLIE Witness to Life During the Lenten season we have explored the Seven Last Words of Christ in Classic Worship. We listen at the foot of the cross in order to know the heart of God because Jesus speaks on God’s behalf. And the Gospel—which means “good message”—centers on the execution, resurrection, and continued life of Jesus. Jesus’ last words express the heart of God. Prior to Easter, we will have heard Jesus give voice to: Our forgiveness. Our inclusion in all the promises of God. Jesus’ desire for us to be his family. Jesus’ abandonment so that we need never be abandoned. Jesus’ genuine humanity. Jesus’ victory in completing his mission. Jesus’ example of complete trust in God. All of these truths are good news for us. But even better yet, as we find in Philippians 2:9, “Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name.” Jesus is exalted. Jesus came back alive from the grave. And Jesus continues to live now and always! 1
“God has vindicated and validated all of who Jesus was, what Jesus said, and what Jesus did. His last words live because Jesus lives. And because Jesus lives, we can live,” (John 14:9). Because Jesus lives, we live! As followers of Jesus we live forgiven, included in all of God’s promises, and forever present in the family of God. This is abundant and eternal life—the best quality of forever living! What’s next? As I’ve been exploring the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ resurrection, something has stood out for me. In Luke the women who visit Jesus’ tomb take it upon themselves to go tell his followers that Jesus is no longer in the tomb. In Mark the angel who meets the women at Jesus’ empty tomb instructs them to go tell this good news. In John Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb and immediately tells others. Then Jesus meets her and instructs her to go and tell the story. In Matthew the angel who meets the women at the empty tomb instructs them to go tell the story. Then, just a few verses later, the risen and living Lord Jesus instructs them to go and tell the story of his new and continued life. pumc.org
Go and witness to life! Yes, the news of Jesus’ new and continued life from the dead is the defining act of God for all time. And almost immediately upon meeting the Living Lord Jesus, his followers are invited to tell about it. “Those who have experienced the Living Lord Jesus can’t help but to tell about the defining, life-altering reality in their lives. In each encounter, we can witness to life by being loving, forgiving, kind, and gracious. We can love neighbors as we love ourselves. And we can always be ready to explain the reason for the full lives we live in Christ,” (1 Peter 3:15). How will you witness to the life of Christ in you? Go in peace. God with God. And be well. Shalom,

A LETTER FROM PASTOR ELIZABETH Happy Easter! We are nearly through Lent and NewDay Praise Worship’s series, “Upside Down.” The core of Jesus’ teaching as found in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) teaches that to be a follower of his, is to live in ways that are often over and against the ways of the surrounding culture. Life with Jesus not only up-ends the comfortable life of a believer, it has the power to turn the world upsidedown - in a good way! We continue the series through Sunday, April 9. Then we turn our attention to Holy Week and the Easter Celebration on April 16. It’s hard to miss how ‘upside down’ the events of Jesus death – and resurrection – are when viewed from our limited, human perspective… • We call the days prior to Jesus death and resurrection “Holy Week.” What is so holy about the Son of God being falsely accused, unfairly tried, and sentenced to death? • Then Jesus was murdered using one of the most painful and gruesome systems of death crucifixion – on what we have come to call “Good Friday.” • And when it seems that at last, all is gone – Jesus is dead, love has lost, hope is extinguished – God turns the grave itself Serving the Children of Plainfield
upside down and raises Jesus from death to life! The story of Jesus’ death and resurrection is the ultimate upside down story. And what’s more, the power that up-ended Jesus’ death and returned him to life is that same power available for the dead parts of our lives. God wants nothing more than to enter our lives and turn our failures, heartaches, hurts, and little deaths upside down – bringing new life into every area of our existence. Sunday, April 16, will be a celebration of this power at work in the Risen Jesus and in us. Invite your friends and bring your family! Every Sunday in NewDay Praise we seek to create a space and an experience where people who don’t know Jesus can meet him, those who do know Jesus can grow in that relationship, and everyone can find a warm welcome and a safe place to ask questions and talk about faith. I hope you’ll join us the Easter celebration, April 16! Blessings,

Worship Annex Work Day Sunday morning worship in NewDay Praise in the Worship Annex (north end of Clayton Hall), is a warm, welcoming – and fun – experience! Since NewDay Praise moved in to the space in January 2016, attendance has steadily grown. We find that we are at capacity most Sundays! Thanks to funding available through the PUMC Trustees, we have purchased additional seating and supplies to finish the ceiling – all so we can make room for more people to worship with us on Sundays. Will you help pull it all together for Easter worship? Please plan to be present for a work day on Sunday, April 2, 1-3 p.m. Tasks will include: • Putting tables together • Unpacking chairs • Replacing ceiling tiles • Misc. cleaning and small maintenance tasks None of the jobs are difficult or technical. Children are invited to participate at their parents’ discretion – though it will be adults only on the ladders. Childcare for infants and toddlers will be provided. Of course, coffee and snacks will be provided, as well. Let us know you can help by marking your Connection Card in worship or just show up! Thanks for helping make room for your friends and family in NewDay Praise Worship! 5

PUMC is thrilled to announce a brand new CD featuring music recently heard in Classic Worship at PUMC. Here’s the best part of all: The CD was entirely underwritten thanks to two anonymous donors, so these discs are available for free, so that you might take multiple copies and share with your friends, family, and co-workers. The new CD will be available in the lobby starting on Easter Sunday morning, and extra copies are available in the church office. Music on the CD ranges from sacred works such as “The Lord’s Prayer” sung by Megan Winsted, Amy Cronin singing “Go Light Your World,” and the gospel quartet singing “I Saw the Light,” plus other music including “Wind Beneath My Wings,” “Til there was You” from The Music Man, piano duets, and much more. Take a copy of the CD for yourself to enjoy in the car while driving,
