JANUARY 7, 2018 CLASSIC WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M. PREACHING CHAPEL | 11:15 A.M.

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO DECLARE? 1 PETER 3:13-16 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

We’ve all had opportunities to speak our mind. As children, we were probably asked, “What do you have to say for yourself?” Thanks to social media, there are more opportunities than ever to make declarations. Last October, we noted the five-hundredth anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. It is widely considered to have begun by Martin Luther posting his 95 theses (opinions) on Wittenberg’s All Saints’ church door. That’s not as unusual as it sounds. The door was the public “chat room” of the day where people routinely posted thoughts and opinions for discussion. As followers of Jesus, we have a faith to declare beyond the basic truths of Christianity. It is personal. What do you have to declare?

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES Worship this morning begins with music played on the classical guitar. Although very similar to the modern acoustic guitar we picture in bands and around a camp fire, there are distinct differences. The classical guitar has 12 frets (compared to 14 on the acoustic guitar) and nylon strings (versus metal on acoustic and electric guitars). The manner of playing the music and the repertoire written for the acoustic guitar are both strikingly different than that for its guitar brethren. The liturgical season of Epiphany immediately follows Christmas and marks the visit of the three Magi to encounter the Messiah, the Christ Child’s baptism and Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding at Cana. Lasting a combined 40 days including the season of Christmas, Epiphany began yesterday and today marks the first Sunday of the liturgical season. Noting this, worship concludes today by singing “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” a Christmas carol based on an African American spiritual. The carol was compiled by John Wesley Work, Jr., a man with a rich and inspiring life. From directing the Fisk Jubilee Singers, attending Harvard University, and even bringing this beloved hymn to life, consider learning more this week about Work’s service to humankind. Today marks the first Sunday of the new Preaching Chapel. Offered at 11:15 in the sanctuary, PUMC’s new Preaching Chapel service includes a prelude, hymn, Scripture and a message. All are welcome to encounter Christ’s ministry among us through the wide worship offerings of this congregation.

2018 Key Leadership

DEDICATION OF ELECTED LEADERS Dear friends, you have been called by God and chosen by the people of God for leadership in the church. This ministry is a blessing and a serious responsibility. It recognizes your special gifts and calls you to work among us and for us. In love we thank you for accepting your obligation and challenge you to offer your best to the Lord, to this people, and to our ministry in the world. Live a life in Christ and make him known in your witness and your work. Do you this day acknowledge yourself as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ? Leaders: I do. Will you devote yourself to the service of God in this world? Leaders: I will. Will you so live that you enable this church to be a people of love and peace? Leaders: I will. Will you do all in your power to be responsible to the task for which you have been chosen? Leaders: I will.

Let us pray. Almighty God, pour out your blessings upon these your servants who have been given particular ministries in your church. Grant them grace to give themselves wholeheartedly in your service. Keep before them the example of our Lord, who did not think first of himself, but gave himself for us all. Let them share his ministry and consecration, that they may enter into his joy. Guide them in their work. Reward their faithfulness with the knowledge that through them your purposes are accomplished; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen. Dear friends, rejoice that God provides laborers for the vineyards. Will you do all you can to assist and encourage them in the responsibilities to which they have been called, giving them your cooperation, your counsel, and your prayers? Congregation: We will.

GRIEFSHARE BEGINS AT PUMC If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, to death you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before. GriefShare begins February 21 at PUMC to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. GriefShare is a thirteen-week, Christ-centered, biblically-based support group experience. A grieving person can join at any time during the thirteen weeks and the group is open to anyone seeking support in their grief. Each session shows a video presentation followed by small group discussion about the video. The video presents experts, ministers and Christian counselors discussing grief and recovery subjects helpful to persons who are grieving. Real people share their stories of what has helped them deal with the pain of losing a family member or friend through death. During the week between meetings, group members complete a Bible study and practical exercises to help them heal from grief. To register for PUMC’s GriefShare group, or to learn more, please make a note on the Connection Card today or contact PUMC’s GriefShare leader, Shannen Shortt, through the church office.
