JANUARY 14, 2018 CLASSIC WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M. PREACHING CHAPEL | 11:15 A.M.

BREAD OF LIFE, WE ARE WHAT WE EAT MATTHEW 4:4 REV. KEN LOUDENBACK

I love to eat. My fondest memories of family generally contained a common meal. The feasts themselves contained recipes of everyone’s liking and many dishes. I loved to eat large portions of everything. It seemed I could eat as much as I wanted and still stay skinny. Those were the days. As I have gotten older, I have learned that I need to eat smaller portions and a more balanced diet. Less pie and more vegetables. What I have really learned is that the physical food was not the only thing that fed me. It was the spiritual food I received with the gathering of family and close friends. I learned this by eating the same meals by myself. It just isn’t the same. When we are fed on the Holy Spirit, we feed each other. This is what truly satisfies us. We have our best life when we feed on God’s word and share it with others. Man does not live on bread alone. We are what we eat.

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES The piano solo played by Organ Scholar Jaime Carini and the Adult Choir’s anthem both feature J. S. Bach’s familiar “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” and the choral anthem incorporates an old hymn, “Praise Him, Praise Him.” Bach was responsible for composing a cantata for each Sunday of the year as well as festival services in the church. He frequently reworked his own compositions or used melodies from other composers in these cantatas. “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” was a melody written by Johann Schop in 1642 which Bach harmonized and orchestrated as the chorale in the 1723 version of his Cantata No. 147, Herz und Mund, und Tat und Leben” (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life). This cantata is the 32nd surviving cantata of the 200 cantatas Bach wrote. Today’s postlude features the Trumpet En Chamade, the horizontal pipes positioned at the back of the sanctuary. En chamade means “to sound a parley” such as might have been used during Medieval times. Trumpet stops are part of the reed family of organ sounds. The Trumpet En Chamade sounds particularly “reedy” as the horizontal pipes project their sound directly into the room. Some might describe the sound as celebratory as they are lovingly called “party horns” by organists. The idea of horizontal pipes was brought to France from Spain and Portugal by French organ builder Cavaillé-Coll who popularized the use of horizontal pipes in his organs. John Stanley’s composition “Trumpet Tune” makes full use of the Trumpet En Chamade. As you listen to the postlude, make note of the interplay of the reedy trumpet timbre with the remainder of the organ.

2018 CHURCH-WIDE STUDY THE WESLEY CHALLENGE: 21 DAYS TO A MORE AUTHENTIC FAITH

On January 21, 2018, PUMC will launch another engaging all-church worship and small group study experience. The Wesley Challenge: 21 Days to a More Authentic Faith encourages participants to grow in their faith through an intentional disciplebuilding process. Be a part of a small group for this series and learn and grow in a deeper faith. Sign-ups continue today in the Main Lobby. Groups are scheduled nearly every day of the week January 21 through February 4. Groups will meet once each week for three weeks. A donation of $10 is suggested (but not required) for the participant book. Learn more at the display at PUMC on Sundays leading up to the January 21 start. You can help make this a formational – and transformational – experience for group participants by leading a small group. To express interest, contact Pastor Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@ pumc.org. Orientation for group leaders is on Sunday January 14, 2018.

FOOTBALL SUNDAY AT PLAINFIELD UMC! Sunday, February 4, is game day across America. Invite a friend to NewDay Praise Worship (8:45 and 10:00 a.m.) to hear from some NFL players about their lives with Christ, on and off the field. And help make this a ‘souper’ Sunday for some hungry people. Bring canned soup to donate to the local food pantry.

PUMC FINANCES AND FUTURE: AN OPEN MEETING Thank you for prayerfully considering the spiritual question of stewardship, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give to support PUMC’s ministries through the Basic Ministry Budget?” Based on best estimates of pledged and unpledged giving, 2018 giving in support of the Basic Ministry (operating) Budget will be approximately $1,026,592. The 2018 budget has been reduced to the 2017 budget of $1,052,434 based on Consecration Sunday responses. We currently anticipate falling $25,842 short of this budget, which does not include increases for rising costs in 2018. As we consider God’s future for PUMC, leadership invites you to join us for an important conversation on Sunday, January 21, 1:30 p.m., at PUMC in the Sanctuary. At this meeting, you will receive more information about the current state of PUMC’s finances and future considerations. You will also be asked to consider additional giving to PUMC. If you feel led to make an additional pledge or gift to the 2018 Basic Ministry Budget before January 21, please contact Brenda Barnett, Financial Administrator, at bbarnett@pumc.org or through the church office. Thank you for your generosity and for your prayerful stewardship of your giving.

BOOK AND MEDIA GIVEAWAY! Please visit the table in Clayton Hall this morning to find books and a variety of media for you to take home. Items are surplus from the PUMC library looking for a new home. Items are free for you to take (or make a freewill offering which will be used for PUMC library expenses and new resources). Happy reading!

GRIEFSHARE BEGINS AT PUMC If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, to death you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before. GriefShare begins February 21 at PUMC to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. GriefShare is a thirteen-week, Christcentered, biblically-based support group experience. A grieving person can join at any time during the thirteen weeks and the group is open to anyone seeking support in their grief. Each session shows a video presentation followed by small group discussion about the video. The video presents experts, ministers and Christian counselors discussing grief and recovery subjects helpful to persons who are grieving. Real people share their stories of what has helped them deal with the pain of losing a family member or friend through death. During the week between meetings, group members complete a Bible study and practical exercises to help them heal from grief. To register for PUMC’s GriefShare group, or to learn more, please contact PUMC’s GriefShare leader, Shannen Shortt at sshortt@pumc.org.
