AN UPWARD FOCUS 2 CORINTHIANS 3:12-18 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG
Have you given up on your New Year’s resolutions? It takes 21 days to develop a new habit. Twelve-step addiction recovery programs also know the wisdom of accountability sponsors and group meetings. This practice of thriving with group accountability has faded from modern Christianity. Many who love Jesus strive to follow all on their own. The Bible has something different to say. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” Following Jesus is a group experience. I hope you find a small group for our church-wide study, “The Wesley Challenge” to help you build new faithful habits as a follower of Jesus.
CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES Worship begins this morning with one of the most iconic sounds for the start of a new day. Listen to the opening notes of the prelude by 19th century Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg…can’t you just picture the sun rising, the fresh crispness of dawn, and the promise of all the infant day has in store? Originally written as incidental music for a play of the same name – typically music to be used during scene changes, between acts or to set a mood – Grieg later massed that music into an orchestral suite we now know as Peer Gynt Suite. The first forte (a louder music dynamic) signifies the sun breaking through. Continuing our theme of dayspring, the processional hymn reminds us that at each hour of the day, at all occasions in life, we should be praising Jesus Christ. With scriptural references from throughout the Bible (Psalms, Revelation, Hebrews), the text gives us a “charge to keep” (see Charles Wesley’s hymn of the same name on page 413 in the hymnal), at all hours of the day and by all of creation: “May Jesus Christ be praised!” The postlude last week was by English composer John Stanley who at only the age of 11 became organist at the famed St. Paul’s Cathedral (London) after his teacher fell ill. The Stanley postlude featured the horizontal trumpets of our antiphonal pipe work located on the rear wall; these pipes are known as the trumpet en chamade. The postlude this morning is another trumpet tune written by English composer Henry Purcell and similarly presents our elegant trumpet stop in a reverent, regal air.

2018 CHURCH-WIDE STUDY
THE WESLEY CHALLENGE: 21 DAYS TO A MORE AUTHENTIC FAITH Today PUMC launches another engaging all-church worship and small group study experience. The Wesley Challenge: 21 Days to a More Authentic Faith encourages participants to grow in their faith through an intentional disciple-building process. Be a part of a small group for this series and learn and grow in a deeper faith. Sign-ups continue today in the Main Lobby. Groups are scheduled nearly every day of the week January 21 through February 4. Groups will meet once each week for three weeks. A donation of $10 is suggested (but not required) for the participant book. Learn more at the display at PUMC on Sundays leading up to the January 21 start. You can help make this a formational – and transformational – experience for group participants by leading a small group. To express interest, contact Pastor Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@pumc.org.
PUMC FINANCES AND FUTURE: AN OPEN MEETING Thank you for prayerfully considering the spiritual question of stewardship, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give to support PUMC’s ministries through the Basic Ministry Budget?” Based on best estimates of pledged and unpledged giving, 2018 giving in support of the Basic Ministry (operating) Budget will be approximately $1,026,592.
FOOTBALL SUNDAY AT PLAINFIELD UMC! Sunday, February 4, is game day across America. Invite a friend to NewDay Praise Worship (8:45 and 10:00 a.m.) to hear from some NFL players about their lives with Christ, on and off the field. And help make this a ‘souper’ Sunday for some hungry people. Bring canned soup to donate to the local food pantry.
The 2018 budget has been reduced to the 2017 budget of $1,052,434 based on Consecration Sunday responses. We currently anticipate falling $25,842 short of this budget, which does not include increases for rising costs in 2018. As we consider God’s future for PUMC, leadership invites you to join us for an important conversation today at 1:30 p.m., at PUMC in the Sanctuary. At this meeting, you will receive more information about the current state of PUMC’s finances and future considerations. You will also be asked to consider additional giving to PUMC. If you feel led to make an additional pledge or gift to the 2018 Basic Ministry Budget before January 21, please contact Brenda Barnett, Financial Administrator, at bbarnett@pumc.org or through the church office. Thank you for your generosity and for your prayerful stewardship of your giving.

TODAY @ PUMC • GriefShare • Wesley Challenge
GRIEFSHARE BEGINS AT PUMC If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, to death you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before. GriefShare begins February 21 at PUMC to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. GriefShare is a thirteen-week, Christcentered, biblically-based support group experience. A grieving person can join at any time during the thirteen weeks and the group is open to anyone seeking support in their grief. Each session shows a video presentation followed by small group discussion about the video. The video presents experts, ministers and Christian counselors discussing grief and recovery subjects helpful to persons who are grieving. Real people share their stories of what has helped them deal with the pain of losing a family member or friend through death. During the week between meetings, group members complete a Bible study and practical exercises to help them heal from grief. To register for PUMC’s GriefShare group, or to learn more, please contact PUMC’s GriefShare leader, Shannen Shortt at sshortt@pumc.org.
