AN UPWARD FOCUS ROMANS 12:9-21 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG
We often live our lives like desk-drawer organizers. Work concerns stay at work. Family issues stay at home. Many people use multiple calendars for this very reason—one for work, one for family, etc. One personal efficiency expert declares, “You have one life; use one calendar.” It’s hard enough to integrate all our activities into one calendar. How about our church stuff, our God stuff? Do you keep it separate from everything else? The questions we have been asking ourselves in our church-wide study seem to suggest that we have one life that relates to God, faces internal struggles, and interacts with others in the world. It’s certainly less complicated to bring our one divine love to our one life along with everyone and everything in it.
CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES We welcome to worship this morning at Plainfield UMC the Chamber Chorus from Covenant Christian High School. Under the direction of Daniel Watson, this talented group of students presents a wide-ranging array of music for our inspiration this morning. This modern-day arrangement of “Lully, Lulla, Lullay” – also known as Coventry Carol – by British composer Philip Stopford provides a fresh, delicate setting of the 16th century composition. The piece is sung a cappella, which means without accompaniment, and illustrates the gentle, linear traits of music through the English choral music tradition. (PUMC has programmed a number of works by Stopford over the years.) The Chamber Chorus also sings choral settings of two familiar hymns: “In Christ Alone” and “How Great Thou Art” are both familiar hymns to many mainline Christians. “In Christ Alone” was written in 2001 by an English-Northern Ireland songwriting duo, and evokes a melody of strong Irish tradition. Worship concludes today with a trumpet voluntary by English composer Jeremiah Clarke, featuring our trumpet en chamade located on the rear wall of the sanctuary. This is the final week of four weeks of trumpet voluntaries showcasing the musical finesse of our rank of trumpet pipes. Interestingly, this piece was erroneously attributed to composer Henry Purcell for more than half a century.

GRIEFSHARE BEGINS AT PUMC If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, to death you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before. GriefShare begins February 21 at PUMC to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. GriefShare is a thirteen-week, Christcentered, biblically-based support group experience. A grieving person can join at any time during the thirteen weeks and the group is open to anyone seeking support in their grief. Each session shows a video presentation followed by small group discussion about the video. The video presents experts, ministers and Christian counselors discussing grief and recovery subjects helpful to persons who are grieving. Real people share their stories of what has helped them deal with the pain of losing a family member or friend through death. During the week between meetings, group members complete a Bible study and practical exercises to help them heal from grief. To register for PUMC’s GriefShare group, or to learn more, please contact PUMC’s GriefShare leader, Shannen Shortt at sshortt@pumc.org.
