FEBRUARY 11, 2018 CLASSIC WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M. PREACHING CHAPEL | 11:15 A.M.

IN THE KEY OF LOVE MATTHEW 9:18-26 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

Improvisation is not just for musicians. We marvel at the way they take a tune and change it as they play, creating music no-one has ever heard. Everyone improvises in daily life. We think we know the plan—the tune. But then something happens and we have to do something different; we have to improvise. Knowing the musical key helps musicians improvise. But, how do we know what to do when the unexpected interrupts our plans? There are not enough rules to govern every situation we face. Our own limited, personal perspectives aren’t always right or helpful. There has to be a better guide to help us sing the song of life in tune. Jesus knows the score.

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES Many changes happened during the 1960’s socially, culturally, and in our churches. One of those changes was the introduction of jazz as worship music. Duke Ellington and his orchestra played “Concert of Sacred Music” for the consecration of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in 1965. Ellington later claimed that it was “the most important thing I’ve ever done.” Ellington married the elements of jazz and words from the Bible in his extended liturgical work. Fortunately for us, this landmark service opened the door for music of all genres to be included in worship, expanding the musical opportunities to celebrate worship. Today we do just that as we welcome the jazz trio. They play three familiar tunes: “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Be Thou My Vision” and “Come, Thou Fount.” Listen for the interplay between piano, bass, and drums as well as the catchy meter of five-four time signature in “Come, Thou Fount.” Improvisation, a cornerstone element of jazz, also appears in other forms of music as you will hear in the upbeat gospel feel of the Adult Choir anthem, “Let Everything That Hath Breath.”

GRIEFSHARE BEGINS AT PUMC If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, to death you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before. GriefShare begins February 21 at PUMC to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. GriefShare is a thirteen-week, Christcentered, biblically-based support group experience. A grieving person can join at any time during the thirteen weeks and the group is open to anyone seeking support in their grief. Each session shows a video presentation followed by small group discussion about the video. The video presents experts, ministers and Christian counselors discussing grief and recovery subjects helpful to persons who are grieving. Real people share their stories of what has helped them deal with the pain of losing a family member or friend through death. During the week between meetings, group members complete a Bible study and practical exercises to help them heal from grief. To register for PUMC’s GriefShare group, or to learn more, please contact PUMC’s GriefShare leader, Shannen Shortt at sshortt@pumc.org.

Expectations include giving leadership to the children’s ministries of Plainfield United Methodist C h urch . T h e DCM will work with pastors, s t a f f, and volunteers to develop, articulate, and deploy a Christ-centered philosophy for faith development at PUMC. The DCM will give direction to the Children’s Council; direct process for recruiting, training, and deploying volunteer leaders; and supervise and train child care and nursery volunteers. (Please see job description at pumc.org for complete list of expectations.)
