IF YOU DO THESE THINGS JOHN 13:1-7, 34-35 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

Psychologists have known for a long time that there is a better way to “find yourself” than isolated self-contemplation. Everyone needs a mirror to see themselves clearly. To know about one’s inner life requires the “mirror” of social interaction. How do others react and respond to me? It’s easy to get so caught up in our own challenges, struggles, and issues that we withdraw from others altogether. That withdrawal can distort our outlook and lead to crippling self-centeredness. Science makes it clear that socializing can help sustain emotional balance. Jesus goes a step further and suggests that if we serve others—considering and working to meet their needs—we will be fulfilled.

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES Good morning, and welcome to worship on this, the fourth Sunday of the season of Lent. A season of preparation and introspection, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on the Saturday prior to Easter. Much of the music in today’s worship reflects repertoire experienced during the tenure of outgoing Director of Music Michael Pettry. Our opening hymn features text by Daniel Crane Roberts, a 19th century American Episcopal priest whose authorship of the hymn was his one hit literary wonder. Initially sung to a different tune, today’s common pairing features music written by George Warren who served at the noted St. Thomas Episcopal Church (NYC). Don’t miss the fanfare trumpets featuring our trumpet en chamade, located on the back wall of the sanctuary. “The Majesty and Glory of Your Name” has become one of this congregation’s signature choral anthems over many years, and “The Prayer” and “Some Days” remind us of the intersection of popular culture and the divine. Take a moment during these pieces to escape the earthy noise and instead experience the sacred nature of poetry, creativity, passion…the human voice, hope and that of a larger presence. Written by American musician Jay Under in 1982 and elevated to national recognition via the PBS series The Civil War, “Ashokan Farewell” unites the piano and violin in a tune reminiscent of the Appalachian musical tradition, which is based on the Scottish and Irish cultures. Ashokan is the name of a town, most of which is under a water reservoir in New York state. Worship concludes with the familiar toccata by Léon Boëllmann, the noted 19th century French composer who lived a brief 35 years. Listen for the melody (found in the pedal, played by the feet) and the perpetual-motion flourishes found in the organist’s hands.

TRANSFORMING FOR TOMORROW

MOTION APPROVED BY CHURCH COUNCIL NOVEMBER 8, 2017

TRANSFORMING FOR TOMORROW SPECIAL CALLED CHURCH CONFERENCE Tomorrow always holds opportunity - for new things, for exciting events, and for hoped-for improvements and transformations. PUMC is looking towards tomorrow with the hope of improvements and transformations that will help us even more fully express the love and grace of Jesus to all who come to this church. The PUMC Church Council is recommending a list of building and property improvements and upgrades that are both needed and desired, as PUMC seeks its most faithful expression of God’s welcome and hospitality. Today, Sunday, March 11, 2:00 p.m., in the church sanctuary, District Superintendent Jim Bushfield will preside at a Special Called Church Conference to consider and vote on the fundraising campaign for the proposed projects. All full members of the congregation present at the March 11 Special Called Church Conference may vote. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of the opportunity before us. Questions may be directed to Transforming for Tomorrow Chair Mike Simek, Church Council Chair Nikki Shoultz or the pastors through the church office (317.839.2319).

Whereas: there are needs for capital improvements which cannot be funded by the Basic Ministry Budget; and Whereas: many of these capital improvements serve to allow for growth; and Whereas: our current growth makes these improvements especially timely; and Whereas: some of the items are necessary and immediate maintenance items; Therefore: The PUMC Council moves that PUMC engage in a capital finance campaign soliciting gifts and pledges to be received up to a 5 year period, which shall be used to complete as many of the projects shown on Attachment A as may be accomplished with recorded gifts and pledges and which shall be commenced in the order specified by the Transforming for Tomorrow Steering Committee after considering suggestions by the PUMC congregation and the recommendations of the Transforming for Tomorrow Project Management, Fundraising, and Communications Committees. Ten percent (10%) of the campaign gifts received shall be placed in the PUMC Major Maintenance account to pay for future capital repairs and maintenance with costs exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000). Financing costs may be incurred where necessary to provide cash flow between the time when pledged gifts are received and the commencement and completion dates of a project. All project expenses and financing costs will be paid for by funds raised from the capital campaign. PUMC will incur no lasting debt in the accomplishments of these projects beyond its ability to fund the projects through recorded financial gifts and pledges.

TODAY IS UMCOR SUNDAY There are special offering envelopes in the worship folder today to receive funds to support the basic work of United Methodist Committee on Relief. This allows money given for a disaster or specific location to be used 100% for that situation. When a flood, hurricane, earthquake happens, UMCOR can send personnel immediately to assess the situation and begin providing assistance. Thank you for your generosity. Donations for UMCOR can also be given via Plainfield UMC App or via SecureGive at pumc.org.
