IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE… JOHN 4:1-14 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

If you are considering travel, there are basics to consider. Where are we going? Who is making the arrangements? What are the accommodations/rooms like? How do we get there? Who’s going to meet us when we get there? What will we do there? Each of us faces an ultimate trip in our future, our trip from this life to the life hereafter. We have nearly the same questions about this trip. But we don’t want the thoughts of a philosopher or the research of a scientist. We want to hear how God would answer our questions about the Larger Life. If Jesus were here, what would he say? The good news is that Jesus did answer these questions.

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES We are delighted that you are joining us for Classic Worship as we celebrate God’s beautiful world, both old and new. The prelude and opening hymn both utilize a tune called, “Terra Beata,” which means “beautiful world” in Latin. American hymn composer Franklin L. Sheppard arranged this tune from an old English folk tune, setting it to the text, “This Is My Father’s World” (UMH #144). In addition to composing hymns, Sheppard worked for his father’s company, which manufactured stoves and heaters. The text’s author, Maltbie D. Babcock, wrote this poem “My Father’s World” while serving in his first pastorate in Lockport, New York, where his daily walks among beautiful natural scenery inspired him to pen the text. Lucas Wassmer presents two solos that continue to celebrate creation. “Ev’ry valley shall be exalted” from Messiah by Handel is set to this text: “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill made low, the crooked straight, and the rough places plain.” It features text painting, which occurs when composers use music to describe the words of the song. Haydn uses a compositional technique called a melisma, where one syllable is sung with many notes, to paint the word “exalted” with florid embellishments. Notice how he juxtaposes this with “plainer,” more straightforward music to the text “the crooked straight, and the rough places plain.” Lucas’s second anthem is by Aaron Copland, whom we think of as a classical American composer. He wrote a beautiful, simple piece to the familiar sacred song, “At the River.” Finally, the closing hymn, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” (UMH #117) reiterates themes from Pastor Charlie’s sermon as we sing of our trust in Christ to bring us into our heavenly home, God’s beautiful new world.
