MARCH 25, 2018 CLASSIC WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M. PREACHING CHAPEL | 11:15 A.M.

WHEN YOU REACH THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN, LOOK UP. JOHN 12:12-19 REV. BOB PREUSCH

Asked about the formative experiences of spiritual life many people will point to a “mountain top” moment… that instant when their questions had answers, and they felt connected: emotionally, intellectually, and physically in tune with the Holy Spirit. For the original disciples entering Jerusalem with Jesus on that original Palm Sunday must have been a mountain top moment. Walking with Jesus through large crowds of followers shouting in faithful celebration; it had to give them chills. We know a lot more was to follow later on, but reflecting on all this in real time, John wrote in the Gospel that the disciples didn’t understand these things at first. In that Palm Sunday moment, yes it was profound, but the disciples had not yet seen the whole story unfold, the picture was not complete. In what ways does our spiritual journey follow a similar pattern of both mountain top views and smaller glimpses, unfolding bit by bit into a growing understanding of Jesus, and of God’s Kingdom?

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES Processing, palms, and praises. These elements of Palm Sunday worship, which we incorporate each year, come from sacred Scripture itself. In the story of Jesus Christ’s triumphant procession into Jerusalem, as relayed in John 12:12-19, we learn that the crowds of people who had traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover heard that Jesus was also coming to celebrate the feast. They greeted him with palm branches, praising him with these words: “Hosanna! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessings on the king of Israel!” And so we celebrate with processing, with palms, and with praises. We praise God with the opening Hymn of Praise, “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” (UMC #280). We also praise him with the hymn concertato, “Come, Thou Almighty King,” which features a collaboration between the Chancel Choir, Chancel Bells, and YOU! Please follow along in your hymnals (UMC #61) and join the ensembles on the last verse. (Words will also be projected at the right time to chime in.) We conclude by praising God with, “Lead On, O King Eternal” (UMC #580). When American composer Carson Cooman (b. 1982) composed his, “Fanfare,” in 2004, he completed his 317th piece (Opus 317). See if you can hear all four trumpets from our organ: the three on the front organ and the antiphonal organ’s trumpet enchimade, which are the horizontal trumpets on the back organ. In the fourteen years since Cooman wrote this piece, he has composed at least 900 more, and you can learn about all 1273 of them here at his website: https://carsoncooman.com/music/.
