A STILL SMALL VOICE 1 KINGS 19: 9-13 REV. KEN LOUDENBACK
Easter has passed, and now what? What are we to do? As believers we are here at church again. Hopefully all of us are here to worship. Some are here to spread His word and others are here to receive His word. Still others are here to be with God and love each other. Then there are those that are lost trying to find out what we are here for. Some are here looking for God. What does God want us to do? In today’s society with all the activities and choices, what are we doing here? That is the question he asks of Elijah in today’s scripture. With all the noise and distractions how do we hear and recognize the voice of God? God talks to all of us in many different ways. Sometimes it is through scripture and other times though other believers. Sometimes He speaks through circumstances. God also speaks through nature. Today I want to explore God talking to us through His still small voice, His Holy Spirit, the word that God places in our hearts. God is calling us, he asks us why are we here.
CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES Serving in mission is the theme of worship today, the second Sunday in Eastertide. 1 Kings 19:11-13 describes how, after the strong wind, the earthquake, and the fire, Elijah heard God in the quiet. Have you heard God’s voice in your times of quiet? What is God saying to you? How is God asking you to serve Him? The words of praise and adoration of the familiar hymn, UMH #89 “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee,” lead us into worship. Texts from our other hymns encourage us to open our eyes, ears, and mouths as we wait silently for God’s illumination; share a conversation with God; open ourselves to God’s call; and make our commitment to draw near to the cross, to Jesus’ side. As part of our April celebration of organists and pianists from PUMC, Debi Kinnamon will share an arrangement for organ of “Ode To Joy” from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. We will then sing this familiar tune in our opening hymn, “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.” Other pieces by Beethoven contribute to the service. Jaime Carini will play the two movements (Tempo di Menuetto and Allegro, ma non troppo) that comprise Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Op. 49, No. 2.

CLASSIC WORSHIP SERIES: EXPERIENCE THE RISEN CHRIST In PUMC’s church-wide study earlier this year, we considered the questions John Wesley and the earliest “Methodists” used to grow as followers of Jesus—to grow in love for God and neighbor. It is helpful to revisit those questions often. During these weeks following Easter, when we celebrate Jesus coming back alive from the dead and his continued life among us, the first Wesley question is especially helpful. “Is Jesus real to me?” If Jesus is alive from the dead and continues to live, have I experienced him? Do I know him? How can Jesus be real to me? What we find in the Gospel of Luke helps us understand how we can “Experience the Risen Christ”. Invite a friend to join you for this Classic Worship series that begins April 15.
TODAY IS MISSIONS PROJECTS SUNDAY This annual special event gives everyone at PUMC an opportunity to see displays and posters about the many ways one can be in service or ministry locally or reaching around the world through Plainfield United Methodist Church. The updated Mission Booklet s now available. Thirty or more missions projects will be featured in the main lobby with persons available to answer questions and give more information. This is a good time to learn about the several work teams which go annually (or more often) from PUMC to Henderson Settlement in Kentucky, UMC Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Illinois, and Strong Ministry in Costa Rica, as well as the many, many opportunities for mission and service right here in the area.
LAST SATURDAY LUNCH LAST SATURDAY LUNCH IS GROWING! Every last Saturday of the month, PUMC (led by members of the Adult FUN Class) provides a community meal. The meal is served in Clayton Hall here at PUMC from 11:30 a.m. 1 p.m., and about 100 meals are also delivered to various locations in Plainfield. Last Saturday Lunch (LSL) leadership has identified additional need in the community and is GROWING this ministry! On the second Saturday of May the ministry will begin offering a meal to the persons on the LSL delivery routes. Every month following, the ministry will deliver about 100 meals to those same persons that receive a delivery on the last Saturday of each month. (No meal will be served onsite at PUMC on these second Saturdays.) Will you help GROW this ministry and prepare and provide meals to hungry neighbors? Volunteer servants are needed to: bake and donate brownies; coordinate and/or cook for one (or more) months; prep, assemble lunches, or clean up from 9 a.m. - noon on these second Saturdays; and deliver meals to area locations. To learn more or volunteer to serve, contact Mary Ann Hamilton at m.a.hamilton2@ gmail.com. Thank you!
