APRIL 22, 2018 CLASSIC WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M. PREACHING CHAPEL | 11:15 A.M.

EXPERIENCE THE RISEN CHRIST IN HIS PRESENCE LUKE 24:13-21 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

When was the last time you were lonely? Were you around people, but still feeling isolated or alienated? Had you experienced the loss of a friendship, other relationship, or the death of someone dear? Had a difficult circumstance made you feel like “nobody knows what I’m going through”. Has fear ever made you feel as if you were alone? Abandonment and isolation are crippling human conditions, perhaps the most critical human problems of all. Easter is about more than our salvation into the life hereafter. Jesus returned to life from the dead and continues to live for us. He also continues to live with us. The good news is that we are never alone.

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES Celebrating the fourth Sunday of Eastertide (the time between Easter and Pentecost), our worship music today focuses on singing praise to God as well as experiencing God’s presence through our faith as we look up to Jesus, the “Lamb of Calvary”, and in our times of quiet when we can walk and talk with Jesus. Our opening and closing hymns, “In the Garden,” and “I Want to Walk with Jesus,” provide opportunities to experience God in corporate worship. The choir anthem by Ralph Vaughan Williams is from Five Mystical Songs. Between 1906 and 1911, Vaughan Williams composed music for four poems written by George Herbert in 1633. Music and verse intertwine in simplicity and directness. While the first four “songs” are more meditative in mood, the “Antiphon” (“Let All the World In Every Corner Sing”) is a triumphant call for all people to raise their voices in praise to God. The choir will also sing “Praise His Holy Name,” arranged in a gospel style by Keith Hampton. We are joined by the choir from Calvary UMC, Brownsburg, directed by Dr. Mark Herris. Dr. Herris has been Director of Music Ministries and Organist at Calvary since 2003. He is a graduate of Goshen College, the University of Notre Dame, and IU Jacobs School of Music. We know Brent Miller as PUMC’s Office Manager, but he is also Assistant Music Director at Calvary. Dr. Herris, Brent Miller, and Jaime Carini share conducting and accompanying responsibilities during the service.

PUMC CONCERT SERIES PRESENTS:

VINCE CARR

The next 2018 PUMC Concert Series event is coming up. Former PUMC organist Vince Carr returns to present “Bloomin’ Pipes!” on April 29 at 4:00 p.m. This is his first full-length recital in Indiana since he was appointed as the newest organ professor at Indiana University in 2017. Join us for this engaging and exciting concert featuring Vince… and a few other surprises!

IT’S TIME FOR KINDERBELLS! At PUMC, Mother’s Day is the time for young children to ring bells for worship. If your child is 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 years old, they are eligible to par ticipate. Rehearsals will be in the sanctuary at 6:30 pm on May 2 and May 9. Then on Mother’s Day, May 13, 2018, the children will gather in the bell room at 9:40am to rehearse and be guided at the proper time to ring at both New Day Praise and Classic worship at 10:00am. Following their presentation, we will guide your children to the Education wing to join their classes. If you have questions or would like to register your child, contact Lynn Blosser at 317-2930013 or lblosser@pumc.org.

Encore Senior Ministries WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Come join the fun! A team from PUMC will once again be going to Henderson Settlement the week of May 20 in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. The volunteers will be working construction, helping in the Thrift Store, Library, greenhouse, adult classrooms, and painting or landscaping. This is a chance for you to experience the joy of giving to others while also being entertained one evening by a group of Appalachian musicians, eating homemade ice cream, meeting new friends, and playing games in the evenings. Or if you prefer, you can just relax and wind down in a comfortable soft chair reading or watching TV. Morning devotions start each day and the week is celebrated on Thursday evening with a review of memorable experiences by volunteers and a meaningful Communion service. If you would like more information or have an interest in participating, please contact Don Sanders at 317.839.7192 or hendersonsettlement@pumc.org. Learn more about the Henderson Settlement at hendersonsettlement.com.

Encore was privileged to have Tamara Jessup, Executive Director of Mental Health America of Hendricks County, speak at our last luncheon. She explained that their organization supports many who would otherwise be forgotten by providing gifts on special occasions and necessities through their recently opened Choice Pantry. While they receive gifts from various organizations at Christmas time, their clients have needs throughout the year. Encore will have a plastic tub available at the Encore Desk in the main lobby to gather your contributions to help meet some of their needs. They are particularly in need of blankets and lap robes; however, there are many items that are listed on the handout that is printed for you to take home with you as a reminder to pick up an item or two to add to the tub. The tub will be available until mid-June. Thank you for your generosity in making this Encore mission successful.

CALL FOR COFFEE CANS FOR ANGEL TREE One valuable resource that is needed for PUMC’s Angel Tree Ministry every year is coffee cans. We decorate these cans for use in delivering home-baked Christmas Cookies to the Angel Tree children. Ideally, we would like to have metal coffee cans, but we realize that they are hard to come by. A viable alternative are round 240 and 270 cup plastic coffee cans. (We cannot use square cans or 210 cup plastic coffee cans. Please drop off clean, empty coffee cans at the Donation Depot near the church office to help with this important part of the Christmas Angel Tree Ministry.
