EXPERIENCE THE RISEN CHRIST THROUGH THE SCRIPTURES LUKE 24:22-27 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

The Bible is critically important to followers of Jesus. As United Methodists, we affirm that, “the Holy Bible reveals the Word of God.” Have you ever tried to read the Bible and discovered that some parts of it are difficult to understand? It’s not an easy book to read. It’s comforting to know that the Bible itself suggests that we need help understanding it. We could all benefit from a Bible tutor. Did you know that Jesus helped his followers understand the Bible… and what it has to say about Jesus himself? It’s true. And Jesus can help you understand what you read there and to experience the risen Christ through the scriptures!

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES We celebrate this fifth Sunday of Easter with many special events today, praising God in word, song, and deed. The Chancel Choir continues week two of its choir exchange with Calvary UMC in Brownsburg. Today, they are joining voices with the choir at Calvary UMC in Brownsburg, singing praises during their worship services. They are presenting the same anthems in Brownsburg that they sang last week here at PUMC. Dr. Chuck Goehring serves as our guest organist, and along with guest soloist Sandy Clark, leads music today. Dr. Goehring retired from full-time church music work in 2006, where he had served as Director of Music at St. Luke’s UMC. (Michael Pettry served as organ scholar under Dr. Goehring.) After retirement Chuck became founding director of VOCE, a professional vocal ensemble in Indianapolis. “How Great Thou Art” is based on a poem written by Carl Boberg from Sweden in 1885. A series of sights and sounds like thunder, lightning, strong winds, showers, a rainbow, and bells tolling inspired Boberg to write this poem. Today the Chancel Bell Choir will be playing a very moving rendition of this favorite hymn. This afternoon, the PUMC Concert Series presents “Bloomin’ Pipes!” at 4:00 p.m., featuring former PUMC organist Vince Carr. Come and enjoy an entertaining program which we offer to you and to your friends as a gift to the community.

PUMC CONCERT SERIES PRESENTS:

VINCE CARR

The next 2018 PUMC Concert Series event is today. Former PUMC organist Vince Carr returns to present “Bloomin’ Pipes!” today at 4:00 p.m. This is his first full-length recital in Indiana since he was appointed as the newest organ professor at Indiana University in 2017. Join us for this engaging and exciting concert featuring Vince… and a few other surprises!

IT’S TIME FOR KINDERBELLS! At PUMC, Mother’s Day is the time for young children to ring bells for worship. If your child is 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 years old, they are eligible to par ticipate. Rehearsals will be in the sanctuary at 6:30 pm on May 2 and May 9. Then on Mother’s Day, May 13, 2018, the children will gather in the bell room at 9:40am to rehearse and be guided at the proper time to ring at both New Day Praise and Classic worship at 10:00am. Following their presentation, we will guide your children to the Education wing to join their classes. If you have questions or would like to register your child, contact Lynn Blosser at 317-2930013 or lblosser@pumc.org.

Casseroles choices include:

• Cheesy Potato & Ham casserole – Creamy cheese based dish of shredded potatoes and diced ham.

• Chicken tetrazzini – Creamy chicken pasta dish topped with blended cheeses.

There are three sizes to choose from to fit your needs. Cost per casserole:

• Mini Loaf: $10.00 • Medium 8 x 8 Square: $15.00 • Large 9 x 13: $20.00

BIBLE EXPLORERS’ KINDNESS GROWS! The PUMC Bible Explorers’ (Grades K-5) Kindness Tree is growing! It now has helping hands! Students traced their hands and wrote ways to help others as ways to show kindness. These have been added to their Kindness Tree in the Main Lobby. In class, Bible Explorers have been learning how Barnabas and Timothy helped Paul spread Jesus’ message of kindness and love, and they are discovering how they can also spread Jesus’ message of kindness and love. You are invited to visit Bible Explorers any Sunday morning, 10:00 a.m, in the south wing of the church.

BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR THE CHURCH! On Pentecost (May 20 this year) we celebrate the ‘birthday of the church’ when the first believers received the gift of the Holy Spirit and the church was born! (Find the story in Acts 2.) You are invited to a church-wide celebration of this special day on the church calendar. Join PUMC for cake, singing, and gifts on Sunday, May 20, 9:35-9:55 a.m. in the east parking lot to celebrate the church, PUMC, and our life together as a community of faith. (Note 8:45 worship will conclude early to allow everyone to participate, and the party will conclude in time for everyone to make it to 10:00 worship and Sunday school.) Gifts of “Birthday Bags” will be received to be donated to the local food pantry. Please bring a birthday gift bag, cake mix, frosting tub, candles, and one additional item (such as paper plates or napkins), assembled or separately, so neighbors that use the local food pantry will have what they need to celebrate a birthday in their own home. On Sunday, May 20, make your way to the east parking lot at 9:35 a.m. and find the table of your birthday month. Hosts will welcome you, help you meet others that share your birthday month, and together we will celebrate the birthday of the church!

Come join the fun! A team from PUMC will once again be going to Henderson Settlement the week of May 20 in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. The volunteers will be working construction, helping in the Thrift Store, Library, greenhouse, adult classrooms, and painting or landscaping. This is a chance for you to experience the joy of giving to others while also being entertained one evening by a group of Appalachian musicians, eating homemade ice cream, meeting new friends, and playing games in the evenings. Or if you prefer, you can just relax and wind down in a comfortable soft chair reading or watching TV. Morning devotions start each day and the week is celebrated on Thursday evening with a review of memorable experiences by volunteers and a meaningful Communion service. If you would like more information or have an interest in participating, please contact Don Sanders at 317.839.7192 or hendersonsettlement@pumc.org. Learn more about the Henderson Settlement at hendersonsettlement.com.

Encore Senior Ministries WHAT WILL YOU DO? Encore was privileged to have Tamara Jessup, Executive Director of Mental Health America of Hendricks County, speak at our last luncheon. She explained that their organization supports many who would otherwise be forgotten by providing gifts on special occasions and necessities through their recently opened Choice Pantry. While they receive gifts from various organizations at Christmas time, their clients have needs throughout the year. Encore will have a plastic tub available at the Encore Desk in the main lobby to gather your contributions to help meet some of their needs. They are particularly in need of blankets and lap robes; however, there are many items that are listed on the handout that is printed for you to take home with you as a reminder to pick up an item or two to add to the tub. The tub will be available until mid-June. Thank you for your generosity in making this Encore mission successful.
